All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:
*Note: Monrovia at San Dimas and Glendora at Diamond Ranch have both been moved to Thursday.
Friday September 22
Baldwin Park (1-4) at Diamond Bar (3-2)
Diamond Bar is coming off of a big win over Paloma Valley least week while Baldwin Park was routed by La Mirada. It’s been a little bit of a struggle for the Braves in the non-league schedule. Both of the Brahmas losses have been close games. Diamond Bar gets the victory.
Diamond Bar 38 Baldwin Park 10
Glendora (4-1) at Diamond Ranch (5-0) (Thursday)
Great non-league matchup. Diamond Ranch is undefeated while Glendora has lost just once-last week to an unbeaten Eitwanda team. The Panthers will hang around for awhile but in the end the Tartans talent will rise to the occasion. Glendora by a couple of scores.
Glendora 35 Diamond Ranch 21
La Serna (2-2) at Damien (5-0)
La Serna’s last three game have been tough. It gets even tougher this week. Damien, right now, is on a different level. The Spartans didn’t play their best football last week and still beat Charter Oak 35-0. Ayden Gutierrez and the Spartans have too much for the Lancers.
Damien 34 La Serna 20
Los Altos (3-1) at California (0-5)
Cal needs to get back on track. The Condors were routed by Covina in Zero Week and haven’t been able to recover since. In four of their five losses they have given up more than 40 points. Los Altos suffered its first loss last week to Jurupa Hills but have been solid this season with wins over competitive opponents West Covina and Walnut. Cal will have to wait at least another week to try to turn things around. Los Altos rolls.
Los Altos 41 California 17
Monrovia (1-2) at San Dimas (3-2) (Thursday)

This one is always a good rivalry whether it’s in the regular season or the playoffs. Monrovia was punched in the mouth by Northview last week while San Dimas ran over Sunny Hills. Should be a close game with the Saints running game vs the Wildcats passing attack. Expect a few lead changes, especially early, as the two teams exchange blows. The Saints survive some Monrovia offensive explosions but eventually settles in and grinds out a win. San Dimas by a field goal.
San Dimas 34 Monrovia 31
Temple City (3-1) at San Gabriel (2-2)
San Gabriel has been up and down. The Matadors have two big wins, sandwiched around a couple of losses. Last week the Mats routed Whittier 46-0. Temple City lost its first game last week after three straight wins – a close 17-14 loss to Pasadena Poly. Both teams can score. It will come down to who can make the most stops. San Gabriel will make the ones that count. SG wins close.
San Gabriel 27 Temple City 24
West Covina (4-1) at El Rancho (2-3)
El Rancho started off fast but the last three weeks have been a struggle. The Dons have been outscored 113-33 in their last three losses. West Covina has been impressive at times. The Bulldogs have just one loss, Week one to Los Altos, but they have grinded out victories in their other four games. El Rancho needs to keep it close and then try to steal it in the fourth quarter. That’s a lot easier said than done. West Covina wins handily.
West Covina 31 El Rancho 7
Torrance (3-1) at Rio Hondo Prep (Kare Park)
Rio Hondo Prep is always fun to watch. The Kares are 5-0 and are averaging over 44 points per game in the process. last week the Kares beat Boron 42-6. This week they are in a for dogfight though. Torrance has won three out of four and last week the Tartars crushed Garden Grove 41-0. RHP battles to the end but ultimately Torrance has too much. Torrance takes it in fourth.
Torrance 31 Rio Hondo Prep 28

Haha, dummy
Good call on that one buddy.
Such is the state of the Del Rio. Whittier thrilled and coach saying Whittier will make the playoffs after losing by only 15 points to Bellflower. He could be right.
I’m intrigued by the WC/ER game because of the history of these 2 systems going at it. Medrano was on staff with Podley when this was a rivalry and took over as the rivalry continued. Not a heated rivalry as in hatred and cheapshots, but a rivalry where the 2 games always meant something big either for league championships or in CIF playoffs. One time, they even met in the CIF championship in what was the best HS football game I’ve ever seen. If not for a dropped interception, Bonita would have a ring.
Diamond Ranch was t supposed to beat Glendora but they did last night. CalPreps great site and usually right , but football is a game of emotion and execution……and teams are still evolving relatively early in the season .
ER will not lose by 28, calpreps doing ER a favor with that ranking. Who can forget the last time ER played West Covina, West Covina was heavily favored and we saw what happened that night. Arty Franco must still be running.
This year, Calpreps is listing the various teams’ chances of winning as a percentage. For example, La Serna is listed as a 35-14 loser to Damien, with the Lancers having a mere 10% chance of winning. ER comes in as a 28-0 loser to WestCo, with only a 4% chance of pulling the upset. At first glance, it looks like Calpreps is providing a service with this chance-of-winning thing, but from my perspective, it might cause casual fans to stay away based on the virtual impossibility of their teams’ situation.
Man my Dons are in some hard times right now but best believe Medrano and staff will have them ready. Never question psych of the DONS, you will get the same mentality kid from Boomer or he wont have them.
As a fan, I knew this could be possibility going into Homecoming. Hopeful to make Monrovia and Mayfair closer games def. but understood its possibilities being two step up games for us.
Montebello was a shock! congrats to them.
3-3 going into league or 2-4 going into league was always the possibility. West Covina is going to be tough and if we know Mike Maggiore, he is going to have his boys ready. He coaches kids not PLAYS TALENT.
Angel did what he needed to do at The Ranch. We got boys stepping up today and tomorrow. Pico Rivera is full of extremely talented kids… don’t Forget we have PICO kids in many schools around our area doing very well. Angel stood home at EL RANCHO…. but I just laugh how good ER would be if all these kids I read about in the paper actually attended ER. To each its own… they feel they got better opportunity elsewhere to get that “offer” …REALITY CHECK tho! that one kid whos got offers coming and national attention will receive the same at ANY SCHOOL HE ATTENDS.
Rivals Camp ALONE… will get you national attention.. lets be real.
lol… what a joke…
Let SG enjoy the victory on a flawed system. They did nothing wrong.
this new system needs to only allow automatic bids into play offs … FORGET QUALIFIERS
if you cant get out your league then you don’t belong in playoffs… make league important again.
This myopic unaware boastful behavior is what is wrong with new equity model . Appreciate the breaks you got and show some humility ( oh that’s another word not in your vocabulary)
You’re the one making a big deal about it , living in the past , and bereft of personal identity
Haha tell me how you really feel. Never thought a bunch of kids from SG winning a ring could strike so many nerves with adults. Now that’s a joke
Nobody cares about D13 championship except the school and parents
When you played a decent team you lost 40-0
Everybody else had -25 ratings in two ply division
That was last year
Soft is not having your own name
SG is a joke. Always has been, always will be. Don’t care of they won their weak division last year.
Gain notoriety? Self glorifying? You must have not been around last year. Tribune, mid valley, literally everyone covered them, four different organizations gave them coach of the year which means staff of the year. Who are you? You’re just a bot. Every credible org gave them their flowers. But here you are crying to Tim about your user name? #soft
SG Green stole credible name to gain notoriety for his unabashedly beloved program . I hope they get rolled by TC
Nothing detached or objective about these self glorifying posts
With all the San Gabriel love fest we see in the posts, I think you are saying Temple City is going to lose by a higher margin that shown above and or on CAL Preps. Better team, better coaching etc. Home game Higher Cal Preps rating
And as observed the coach turned back into a pumpkin last week, in a loss to Poly.. That likely was the difference between a pat on the back for an improved year and making some low division playoff as an at large for TC.
ON the horizon maybe those boosters in Monrovia might be getting a little concerned with their league championship streak, Cal Preps has South Pasadena with a higher rating that the Wildcats. Maybe the home game will be the difference for M? or not? A ways off but likely going to be the game of the year for SP and M.
BG got what they asked for, they brought in a Bosco Kid for League. So they got bumped up to play with similar schools and then got sent home. Again recruiting vs coaching
You put any of those coaches at a SG or a Rosemead and tell them you can’t bring in kids you have to coach the kids that are there, they all get worked, probably quit and blame the school. Only one who could do it is probably Marcel because he got that dawg in him.
Way harder to win at a school like SG, Alhambra, Rosemead, gabrielino etc. That is a tough area. Every school in that area is down bad. All those coaches have way different demographics and way less resources. SG still found a way. Competitive equity makes it an even playing field when it comes to playoffs. All your transfers get to go against teams with similar players. That’s when you really see what coaching is about when the players are similar. I’d say that staff definitely outcoached and outwork most programs. They had like 3 coaches.
Yes , throw some facts and common
Sense at the obviously attached observer ! #fake #badtakes
@Detached Observer,
So San Gabriel had the best coaching because they lost to BG and got sent to Division 13? That’s a stretch man. Then you go onto say that it’s about CIF championships and not Calpreps ratings. What do you think determines the CIF divisions??? When did I say they should be in a 10 week slugfest? What San gabriel did by winning a CIF championship should be commended. But let’s not act like the coaching staff there would outwork or out coach the likes of Amat, CO, La Serna, Northview, Los Altos, Glendora, St. Paul, and many many others.
Btw Cal preps says
2013 CIF D13 Champ Salesian 48
2022 CIF D13 Champ San Gabriel 12
Salesian 99% chance victory
In
Their project a matchup
I saw their defense if you got shut out by Atascadero you’re not scoring on that Salesian squad
This is how times have changed
#bestofworst
Nobody said manipulating. Schedule appropriately. Nobody said tank games. San Gabriel played 16 games. That’s a lot of football. Most of you guys can’t touch your toes, but want these kids to go through a ten game slug fest before playoffs? How bout go into playoffs healthy? What a concept.
I’m glad you finally came to your senses.
You’re right . San Gabriel is the beacon for all programs and one of great high school teams of the last decade . All that matters is CIF championship , not tying for third in Almont league last year. Coaching brilliance made you a high seed in division; nothing random that being 177th out of 208 playoff teams landed you number 2 seed …….you’re the real detached Observer lol
@Detached Observer,
I disagree while heartedly. Not about the recruiting part but about the playoff part. Coaches should look to get their teams to be as good as they possibly can be. That’s what sports are about. Not manipulating a schedule or tanking games so you can win a championship. That’s weak.
The kid isn’t even 18, nice try bud.
Almost as old as Owen long
The goal is to win a CIF championship. Not win a t shirt or finish with a high cal preps rating. All these coaches have known about the new system. They unanimously voted on it. If your coach scheduled appropriately and landed you in a division you can win then you got yourself a great coach. If your coach is still playing the transfer game and getting knocked in the 1st round then your coach is a recruiter not a coach. Look at SG last two years. Winning record plus the hardware.
“Psychologically?” it’s football get out of here with that bs. You heal up and do what you’ve done for the last 6-7 years.
Diaz turns 20 next month?
It is clear that the Oilers are clearly the highest ranked team in the Almont. Hopefully SG can win against TC, ride the momentum into league to make things interesting.
Not sure if your question is sarcastic , rhetorical? Having .500 record has always been the criteria for at large teams that are not automatic qualifiers from their league . This criteria is still largely intact , however CIF has looked past this in recent years since the advent of competitive equity playoff model . Simply put if they need teams in a Division they allow them in regardless of bad record . This wouldn’t be so troubling if CIF wasn’t arbitrarily creating divisions at seasons end .
Last year Valley Christian making deep playoff run with horrible record , Rosemead getting in at 3-7, and recent Newport Harbor Championship run come to mind .
If you’ve ever been in the wrong side of these arbitrary CIF decisions , it’s very painful !
@CIF,
That’s not rule nor is it new. A team must be an automatic qualifier from league play. If they are not an AQ then CIF starts to select at large teams for each division. Cif selects teams with .500 records (5-5 and above) first. This is how teams such as Damien have missed the playoffs despite being highly rated… Bonita had a winning record last year and missed the playoffs. Bottom line is, be an automatic qualifier in league to avoid the at large drama.
ER looks to be in a bad place psychologically, whereas Santa Fe is in the opposite situation. What a difference a year makes; and more to the point, what a difference the graduation of Angel Diaz has made.
Is it true there is a new rule that a team must have at least 5 wins to be in the playoffs?
