(La Puente)- Steve Hagerty has resigned as the head football coach at Bishop Amat after 17 years he announced Friday. Hagerty released a statement that said in part that “It was simply time for new leadership. I no longer believe that I am the guy to lead this program.”
Bishop Amat had an overall record of 118-68-1 overall under Hagerty and 2-8 last season. Bishop Amat won three league championship and had three CIF Semi-Finals appearances during his tenure.
Bishop Amat will begin the search for a new head coach effective immediately.
Here is the statement released by the school:

Hagerty for 17 years made it a respectable program and instantly got them on the winning track after the two years Mark Verti was outcoached due to inexperience, including his pop warner coaching staff at the time. In comes Hags and the program starts to win. It is true Amat was the school to play for back in the day. Today they should be playing down in D4 or 5. Cory Minor is back but that is just a name to hang on. With tuition cost and social media at an all time high, you do not need the Amat name or past glory to standout if you have football talent. Public school is doing just fine sending kids to play at College Football Universities.
@Pseudonym,
That’s a great idea!!!
P.S. I meant to say between the West I.E. and SGV. I’m not sure if that made it on there, for the record.
I saw this coming about a week ago, but didn’t want to conjecture on this situation. I will, however, nominate someone for the job as a mere observer. Given a recent trend started by St. Paul—trends exist, for better or worse—I had a thought for a replacement. If, IF, Amate decides to consider candidates outside the Amat family, much like St. Paul did, I would nominate Coach Darryl Thomas from Upland. He would bring not only great program and man management, but possible “pull” (if you will) from both the West I.E. and the SGV due to local familiarity and name recognition. Just a thought.
Which one ?
they need to back up the brinks truck and hire either frank mac mannis or paul crownin.
I guess I’ll say it, Bring in coach O.
Amat Son I 100 Percent agree with you because White was/did a super job converting Buena Park from way below average into a top half of the Freeway League team. I think BP finished second place soon after White took over …
The comments of Translation and ? are so off base. I’d agree if Hagerty were some fly by night coach who was at Amat for a few years and then bailed. But the man was there for 17 years. That’s almost unheard of in this day and age.
@Karma: You have been recruting kids and coaches from the area and near by schools for years keeping them from succeeding. Now things have changed, those atheletes know how to go elsewhere, Amat is now a feeding ground for better programs! Call that karma or what you will. Ask the student/ atheletes, coaches there are never fair… so take a sip of your own med amat, Im going to Damien! Ranked Number what?
He has been the best SGV coach for the last 2 decades and it’s not even close. He has competed with the very best of the best with kids who are just hard nosed and care about that big golden A. People forget how bad of shape Amat was in prior years to Hags righting the ship. Great job Hagerty and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Too often coaches that have trouble recruiting or lose key guys to graduation quit and give up rather than stay, accept the challenge and rebuild and coach up. While 2-8 ain’t good there are lower level teams that were 2-8 last year and their coach hung in are in in the semi’s right now. These cut and run coaches while demanding that their players be tough are not tough themselves when it gets to hard. Head coaches that get players from all over and coach in D1 thru D5 I suspect aren’t all that.
Go get get some D14 titles and work your way back up the food chain. Better get a name coach quick or the players they have are gonzo.
This would have been a great spot for the late Anthony White. Solid record but in that time only three semi final appearances. I know it’s big boy football but someone if you’re gonna have a tenure that long got to have something more to show.
Disregard the niceties and the stated reasons…the recruits aren’t coming anymore, so Hags is bailing. Rest in peace Lancers.
karma. now this “school” can finish the spiral down to the gutter it is currently on. cou’dnt have happened to a more deserving program.
