If you’ve got numbers to contradict me, I will happily change my tune, but it sure didn’t feel like Covina’s defense spent much more time on the field than Katella’s in that second half. Both offenses were scoring virtually at all. The fact that Covina’s last possession came with too little time to do anything seemed more to do with happenstance than anything deliberate on the Katella sideline. That said, Katella had to run a few plays on their last possession. Everyone in the stadium had to have known that they were not going to be stopped. The smart play for Covina (albeit one that most of us would only have the guts to make from our couches) might have been to have just surrendered that TD as quickly as possible to leave enough time for a decent possession. Oh well…easy for me to say from the comfort of my living room.

La Cañada will play at hoover’s football stadium which is rare for hoover.

And really, I think tc playing rio hondo prep (as they both have 9-game schedule) would be a good little rivalry game, as good as lc rematching hoover.

Im surprised that you haven’t heard of Brett Walsh, he started at Northwestern at LB and he was very instrumental in the playoffs against Covina.

Blake Cussick has to be one of the best kickers to every come out of Monrovia, he is the starting K/P at Fresno State.

Jordan Nathan is quickly becoming the go to guy at Utah State at receiver, He has really matured at that position since leaving Monrovia.

Last but not least, I give Mason Bryant a lot of credit for graduating in 4 years from Penn with honors and pursuing his dreams outside of football.

Ok will give you a couple of them…but

    1. Ellis dropped out of UCLA after limited playing time his soph season. So that would be a 1 on my post.
    2. Norman transferred to Hawaii aftr 2 years at Fullerton…so he was not a D1 out of Monrovia.
    3. Bryant didn’t play 1 down of Varsity football at Penn. Please show me stat sheet that says otherwise. Penn has no stats on him and his bios said he didn’t play first 3 years. Was he a scout?
    4. Scoby can get elected president and Monrovia would have nothing to do with it. He flopped in your laps after 4 other schools.
    5. Forgot about Frazier. Kid was a stud.
    6. Brain farted on Spencer too. But being a USC fan you have to forgive me for not paying attention to anything UCLA. 🙂

With the exception of Potts none of the other names rings a bell but you got the proof so I stand corrected. Good job staying on top of your kids…seriously!

Thats funny, take my word, your assistant (Football FanA) has already laid claim to this victory by 3 now you are going to up the ante by 4, you guys couldn’t stop a 300 pound QB form Kattella and a 6.3 40 yrd dash running back so what makes you think that you will stop anyone on the Monrovia squad. Our schedule was much tougher than yours so I give the Defense a lot of credit for staying with the program. If you check out their practices you will see a huge difference with our DL and OL with a D1 receiver named Hernandez. All I can say is this is going to be a much tougher game than you would like to believe. Remember Grandpa Colt how you dodid over your neighbors San Dimas back in the day? well this is 2018 and its Covinas turn. again

Monrovia has one of the best defenses in the SGV ? Seriously???
Riddle me this : How does one of the best defenses in the SGV only go 4-7 with their ONLY wins in the mighty Rio Hondo league? Wait…you DO realize that the defenses job is to keep the other team from scoring more points than you….right? Defense is NOT that wooden thing separating your property from your neighbors.
At no point have I ever stated that Covina has one of the best defenses in the SGV, or would I ever. But it certainty is good enough to stop the kitty cats.
Obviously YOU have not seen the 20018 versions on Nin Burns II and Eric Cuellar. You are also gonna LOVE our wide outs.
Friday the 13th we are going to see who has the better crystal ball. Right now mine is saying us by 4 scores. 🙂

And now I will deflect to a quote from a very wise man.

Although I’v never been a coach or had much interest in high school football following a football injury in the 9th grade, I’ve been an “Armchair Quarterback” since then, so concepts such as clock management, balanced offense, and the importance of good coaching come to mind as major contributing factors for winning teams.
I was at the final game for Covina last year and I think Covina HS lost to Katella when it abandoned the run in the first half and found it could score at will with the pass. The Katella coach told to the O.C. Register before the game that it needed to stop the run to win, and they succeeded. Covina’s success at passing with quick touchdowns led to it’s defense being on the field an inordinate period of time, so that when it came time to stop Katella’s run game, the Covina defense may not have been at it’s best, and when Katella scored it’s last touchdown, it did not leave much time on the clock for covina to outscore them. This was no mistake as good coaching will do that. I think the Katella coach, with one CIF championship already, was a good tactitian, which may have made the difference in the CIF title game, otherwise Covina might have run the board in the state tournament with the talent it had last year. The coach’s biggest problem this year may be whether to pass or to run. But, like I said, I don’t have any work experience with this subject like most contributors to this website do, but the theory behind it seems tantalizing.

Whats up Colt? Now its your turn again. I remember back in 2011 you guys were I believe undefeated going into the playoffs not giving up no where near the number of points this years team is allowing. You stated then that the Cats couldn’t possibly win that CIF semifinal matchup. Well, not much I see has really changed except the names of the main characters. You guys had a guy named Livingston running for his life that evening he was probably the best QB in the area at that time. Monrovia was much too aggressive for the Colts offense and the result showed early in the game making believers out of Colt fans in the first quarter. I won’t make a prediction either for this game but I will observe what I do believe your weakness are and in saying that the Colts will face a team that will be very aggressive both on Offense and on Defense, whereas you guys lost a great portion of your D, Monrovia has on of the best Defenses in the SGV coming back. Im not saying that Covina is not capable of getting the job done, but your counterpart is already giving them 3 TD advantage, please stay away from Vegas with this character. Ps.. apparently you haven’t seen the 2018 version of Maury Rams.

  37. July 23, 2018 - 10:45 am | Permalink

I always love to read Myopic-cat’s assessments of how good Covina is, or is not.
It’s like reading a plumbers review of a new brain surgery technique. A plumber that was only able to unclog 4 out of 7 sinks they went to repair at that.
Stating that Maury Rams is going to be better and tougher than Steven Comstock was the punch line of a great 2 paragraph joke.
I’m not going to get into what I think the outcome of our game will be.
I’ll let the scoreboard do that.

You guys have a great Coach now. I hope you guys do him right for all your other games besides ours.

Monrovia has faced much better in its long tradition of winning. Speed changes everything especially on defense. Covina has lost a lot of its defensive weapons from their defense that was giving up an average of 27 points. last season and now your top defensive guys are gone, What are you going to do? Monrovia has running backs that will run all over you if you think having a couple of good offensive players are going to keep you in every game. Your D. better show up with their A+ game otherwise you will be seeing a repeat of the Northview game from last season. Culver City was a pass only team and you guys had to go tit for tat, had either of you guys had a running game that worked and a defensive that could stop anything that team would have been dominant. It was like watching a flag football game. You guys allowed Comstock and Castillo run for over 420 yards in your meeting last season. Maury Rams and company are going to be much faster and tougher than that.

I too believe that Covina will be kidding themselves once the pads go on if they think they will run through the Monrovia Defense. This years team is much Bigger, Faster & Stronger on defense than in the past few years and much more mature. The Monrovia offense if allowed to get their running game going strong early on will make most teams pay and control a game if you are not prepared to stop them. I know that Covina has some pretty good players but this is going to be a much tougher test for 80% of your team and if no one steps up then you will be in for the fight of your lives.
