(Monrovia) – The Monrovia Wildcats balanced attack proved to be too much in a 27-7 victory over the visiting Paramount Pirates.

Paramount started its first drive pounding the ball with Jerramie Jackson. Jackson gained 25 yards on his first four rushes in an inside rushing attack.  The Pirates switched to Taj Davis, who gained 1 yard on two runs.  After a third down sack, Paramount caught a huge break on fourth down when Michael Harris received a roughing the passer penalty, resulting in a automatic first down.  The Pirates took advantage of their renewed drive when Dominique Brown connected with Davis for a 24-yard  touchdown pass.

Paramount would not see the end zone for the rest of the night.

After stalling on its first drive, Monrovia found success on its second.  Nick Bueno’s 36-yard punt return set the offense up at the Pirate 11.  On second down, Bueno connected with Jay Henderson on a 8-yard slant route.  Bueno connected with Henderson again on the next series on a 18-yard strike

In the second quarter, after a 29 run from Brown and a defensive pass interference, the Pirates found themselves within scoring distance.  On first and goal, Larry Hill took the outside and scored from 9-yards out.  However, the score was called back due to a holding penalty. Two plays later, Monrovia’s Derrin Jenkins intercepted Larry Hill in the end zone to stop the Pirate drive.

Being contained all night on the ground it was Buenos passing ability which caused Monrovia to be successful. He finished 9 for 12 for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns while being held to 23 yards rushing.  Luke Williams was Bueno’s favorite deep threat, with 87 yards on 3 catches. Ellis McCarthy, Brandon Wingenbach, and Anthony Craft also had receptions.

Michael Harris did most of the work on the ground for the Wildcats. Harris finished with 99 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 3 yard touchdown run.

“We can do it in the air and on the ground,” said Monrovia Head Coach Ryan Maddox.  “We just took advantage of what the defense gave us.”

For Paramount, Jerramie Jackson finished with 112 yards on 20 rushes.

“Our kids played hard,” Maddox continued. “We gave up some yards early on, but we made adjustments second half to shut them out.”
