The El Monte-Mountain View rivalry stretches back to 1972

Good Morning!

What is a rivalry game? How should a rivalry game be viewed?

Temple City-Monrovia is not a rivalry game…unless both schools are playing good ball.

On the other hand Mt.View-El Monte is a rivalry whether or not both schools are playing well, poorly, average, or somewhere around thereof.

The Vikes and Lions are next door to each other as well as cross pollinated with friends and family on both campuses.

You look at Monrovia-Temple City and the best team is always going to win. You look at View-EM and you can’t be sure because for a few hours tonight they are going to hate each other. This hate will make anything possible.

With that said…I don’t know who to pick tonight at Lions Stadium…The best overall team might not win, but the team that keeps it head on straight in what essentially is a family fight should do well…

The El Sombrero is going to busy…

Last Add El Monte: EMHS will retire Hector Urias’ number 11 jersey in a special ceremony.

Talk about cross pollination…San Marino at Temple City… The last time Titans HC Mike Mooney came in leading another school (San Marino) was on November 6th, 1998. It didn’t go well, the Rams Jamil Frazier ran for 286 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-14 victory over SM.

I wonder what Mooney thought of Frazier’s performance?

“What do you think I thought of his performance, the guy scored three blanking touchdowns against us! And you’re wondering what I thought of his performance! What kind of question is that? What did I think of his performance? I thought it was blanking horsebleep!”

Okay, sorry I asked.

This week they were selling “Forget the Titans” tee shirts at Temple City.

One local baseball coach told all the dads of the players on his team. “Thanks for all the hard work you put in getting your sons ready to play, but now your coaching days are over.”

El Monte-Mt. View One More Time: In the first ever meeting between the schools (October 6th, 1972) Lions quarterback Gary Pellant ran for two scores and threw for two more to Mike Raymond in a 41-0 victory over the Vikings.

That initial season for View, under HC Bob Casper, was a brutal one as they went 0-9. The Vikings would tie Norco 13-13 in the 1973 season opener before picking up their first varsity football win on October 25, 1973 with a 14-7 decision over Schurr…SAY WHAT?… I said they took a 14-7 decision over Schurr…

For the Lions in 1972 the victory over View improved first year HC Dave Brooks’ record to 2-1 but five consecutive losses would take them out of contention in the Mission Valley League’s inaugural season. The burden did lift some in week nine when El Monte squeaked out a 16-15 win over Arroyo.

I believe in the policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”… Especially when it comes to picking a winner between Whittier Christian and Maranatha…

You know things have changed at The Mid over the last couple of years when this became a MUST cover game…

***

What else do head coaches do besides coach, fundraise, teach, counsel, clean up, and put up with administration hacks? Try running the scoreboard for the freshman football game. This is exactly what Hoover HC Chris Long was doing Wednesday afternoon when the Tornado frosh team was hosting Burbank…

Last Add Burbank Frosh: Keep an eye on Gary Clements…middle linebacker and tailback for the Bank rookies.

***

I feel the need to waive the 600-word rule in lieu of my poor performance this week in getting the column out. Even health issues are no reason to miss a post…

***

San Gabriel is part of the Old School Mid Valley…They will always have a place in my heart…especially after a lunch purchased at Armando’s…but word to Matador faithful…and the Matador team…DO NOT TAKE MONTEBELLO LIGHTLY!

You should win, but don’t look past them…the consequences to your season could be devastating…

***

Nostradamus Moment: Gabrielino will either score 40-points tonight or get shutout.

***

Things should go better for Arroyo at “The Swamp” this evening…much better than they did back in 2008…I won’t mention who put the dagger in His Arroyo Baldness’ heart that night but he currently attends La Verne and his initials are J.G.

***

In violation of Peterson’s Law #2…which states never pick a winner until the game is over…I’m gonna go with the more veteran team at Whittier College this evening.

***

Have you seen a Chalk Talk: 6 Power? Neither have I and that’s why Temple City is beating San Marino tonight at Hitchcock Stadium…Sorry but that combined with the absence of Kwame Do equals bad mojo…

***

For the sake of peace and harmony I would like to wish Wilson a win against Northview…but there is no peace and harmony at Wilson…If Johnny Unitas came down out of the sky and played quarterback for Wilson there would be no peace and harmony…If the Wildcats won the Mid-Valley crown there would be no peace and harmony…Because it seems like the situation at Wilson is not about peace and harmony, nor victory, but power and control.

Note to Wilson Fans: Keep it up…you’ll end up looking like Blair, Pasadena, Keppel, Bassett… behold your future…

***

If you needed a definition of what a Rosemead football player looks like…I’ll tell you; Cesar Chavez, number 44. Our prayers and thoughts go to him and his family…

***

San Dimas you better beat Pomona…

***

Everything is on the line for Muir tonight…

Note to Mustangs: Crescenta Valley is not going to roll over and die for you. You better come to play or you will be the fourth place team in the Pacific come playoff time…destination somewhere down the 605.

***

Now that I think about it Muir was the fourth place team out of the Pacific in 2009 and got shipped out to Charter Oak…Where they nearly upset the Chargers…and were the only opponent to give CO a scare during the post-season…

Last Add Mustangs: Never mind, you probably know exactly what you’re doing…but can I suggest strong doses of Tairen Owens…It is the best way to keep Zac Wilkerson and the CV offense off the field.

Stay thirsty my friends…
