South Hills Survives Ayala 36-33

By Corey Kwok

(Covina) – A huge night on the ground by Jamel Hart proved sufficient enough for South Hills in a 36-33 win over Ayala Friday night at Covina District Field.

Ayala had a chance to tie with a 38 yard field as time expired but the kick fell short enabling the Huskies to snap a five game losing streak. It was also South Hills first win in Sierra league play forcing a four way tie for second place with Chino Hills, Damien, and Charter Oak.
Hart rushed 30 times for 215 yards and all five South Hills touchdowns including a 39 yard blast to pay dirt that put the Huskies up 36-26 with 2:24 left in the game.

Hart now has 884 total rushing yards on 152 carries (5.82 per carry average) with 13 touchdowns.
The contest was an all out shootout with neither team having a firm grip on the scoreboard. Overall, there were three ties and six lead changes with South Hills scoring first on Hart’s run in the first frame.

Ayala proceeded to march 7 plays and 78 yards as Mauricio Reynoso barged in from 1 yard out for the first of 3 ties.
The Huskies were stopped cold on their next series, allowing Ayala to regain possession at 14-7 on one of two TD passes to Tevin Campbell from quarterback Caleb Carrillo.

Hart then took the initiative again in response for South Hills as he accounted for most of the 77 yard, 9 play drive to forge the second of 3 ties at 14-14 with 4:02 in the second quarter.
But Ayala followed with a huge play on third and 16 at their own 29 as Carrillo fired a 71 yard TD strike to Campbell as Ayala broke another deadlock to go up 20-14.

Aided by a personal foul penalty by the Bulldogs, the Huskies used four plays to go 68 yards as Hart capped that with his third score. Jordan Gutierrez booted the extra point and South Hills led 21-20 at the break.
Neither team scored until the final minute of the third when the Bulldogs regained the lead for the final time. Reynoso broke through for a gain of 38 to start their series and Campbell struck gold five plays later on a two yard run for a 26-21 lead. The two point conversion pass attempt was underthrown.
The Huskies then moved 71 yards and held the drivers seat for good. A nine yard pass from Vincent Hernandez to Ralphie Bingochea for a first down was followed with scampers of 32 and 4 yards by Gutierrez. That set up Hart’s finishing touches as he went for 2, 14, and 9 yards prior to scoring his fourth touchdown from 2 yards out. Hart then ran in the two point conversion to make it 29-26.

Hart then gave the Huskies a ten point cushion with his fifth and final score after the Huskies defense halted Ayala at the Huskie 41.
Carrillo found Nate Shaw in the endzone for 31 yards with 1:21 remaining. Ayala had one more shot when the defense held but Jacob Osborne’s 38 yard boot fell short as South Hills hung on.
Tevin Campbell finished with three scores on 5 catches for 108 yards and 5 carries for 50 yards and 1 TD to lead Ayala’s offensive unit.
