A Closer Look at the Valle Vista

(L-R) Gustavo Garcia, Moses Vega, Michael Soto, and Aaron Gomez of Wilson. The Wildcats have to win out to have a shot at post season

Covina’s win over Baldwin Park placed the Colts in control of the Valle Vista. They’re business isn’t finished yet though as they still have to battle San Dimas on November 5- their last game of the regular season.

Baldwin Park will be rooting hard for SD since it would give them a shot at league. Of course the Braves can’t overlook Wilson this week. As for the Wildcats, they need to win out and then see how it plays out.

Covina (7-1), 4-0) – Everybody was talking about Billy Livingston and Gevontray Ainsworth when the season started. Although those guys have been great, Vinny Venegas has been the guy – or “The Dude” as Coach Darryl Thomas says. The Colts get Pomona this week but they have circled November 5 and San Dimas on their calendar.

Body of Work: 24-32 overall record of opponents; 2-0 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: Pomona, at San Dimas (8-7 record remaining opponents)

Projection: First

Baldwin Park (2-5, 2-1) – The biggest win of the season was the Braves 19-14 victory over San Dimas on October 8. BP knocked Livingston out of the game last week but was unable to take advantage in a 17-9 loss. The defense is solid and the Braves have the advantage of having already played the big two. They should win the rest of the way.

Body of Work: 34-18 overall record of opponents; 1-3 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: Wilson, Nogales, at Northview (7-14 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Second

San Dimas (5-3, 3-1) – The Saints have showed remarkable resiliency this season They bounced back from a big deficit to beat Monrovia earlier this year and hung with Rancho Cucamonga. Of course there were the losses to Baldwin Park and Bonita. The Bearcats are undefeated but they won by three touchdowns with their backup quarterback. San Dimas needs to beat Covina for everything to be okay.

Body of Work: 27-29 overall record of opponents; 1-2 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: Covina, at Wilson (11-4 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Third

Wilson (4-3, 1-2) – One thing we know for sure. Wildcat fans are passionate. Wilson has been running a two quarterback system through out the year and started off pretty well winning three of its first four. Since then the Cats have lost two of three with both losses coming in league sending the fans into a frenzy. Despite all that they still have a shot but with BP and SD still left it won’t be easy.

Body of Work: 23-28 overall record of opponents; 1-2 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: at Baldwin Park, at Pomona, San Dimas (10-12 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Fourth

Northview (2-5, 2-2) – The Vikings deserve a lot of credit. They have a first year coach in Marcel Perez and lost some talented players to graduation. They were picked by most to finish near the bottom of the Valle Vista. But after wins over Wilson and Pomona they are at .500 in league. Also they only lost to Covina by three. It’s still a rebuilding year for Northview but it looks like there is definitely something to build on.

Body of Work: 35-15 overall record of opponents; 1-5 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: Nogales, at Walnut, Baldwin Park (6-15 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Fifth

Pomona (3-4, 0-3) – The Red Devils started off winning their first three games but have lost four consecutive since including three in the V-Vista. Anthony Rice’s crew would have to reel off their last three and hope for a miracle to get in the playoffs but with Covina as the first step that’s a lot to ask.

Body of Work: 25-26 overall record of opponents; 1-2 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: at Covina, Wilson, at Nogales (12-10 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Sixth

Nogales (1-6, 0-3) – The Nobles have a new coach in Sebastian Hernandez and some talent on the field but they might still be a year or two away. Quarterback Keith Bolden leads an offense that is capable of scoring points but it has been a struggle defensively. Bolden, only a junior, brings some hope for next year.

Body of Work: 30-23 overall record of opponents; 0-5 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: at Northview, at Baldwin Park, Pomona (7-14 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Seventh
