Heralds Topple the Lancers

Whittier Christian moves forward.

(Whittier) The Whittier Christian Heralds took it to Bell Gardens in the first half, and held on in the second, to best the Lancers 35-9 in the opening round of the CIF playoffs.

BG was able to get the ball at the Herald 27 yard line from a long kickoff return by Steven Ibarra. The Lancers were able to get about 10 yards, but thanks to penalties they had to settle for the 27-yard field goal by Ricardo Pena. With four minutes gone in the first BG was up three to nothing.

Whittier Christian came out firing with quarterback Stephen Anderson completing eight of his first ten passes for 96 yards and a touchdown pass to Cody Bronkar. Over that span the Heralds scored 13 points completing the first quarter 13-3.

WC scored on its next two drives in the second quarter. Both times on Grant Escobar runs, the first from five and the second from two yards out. Escobar finished the first half with three touchdowns on only seven carries. Both scores were set up by the Heralds moving the ball down the field with Anderson hitting wide-outs Cody Bronkar or Cameron Stanley, the pair combined for 13 catches and 170 yards receiving,

On the night Anderson finished with 190 yards passing, another 114 rushing and a rushing score to go with the touchdown through the air to lead Whittier Christian to the victory.

The score at the half was WC 28 BG 3.

The Heralds came out blazing in the second half with Anderson utilizing his feet to lead the offense. The biggest play came on a 33-yard scramble by Anderson saving the drive. Anderson capped it off with a rush around the end for the 11-yard score.

The score with 9:26 left in the third: Heralds 35 Lancers 3.

Bell Gardens was able to break the goal line on a two yard Ibarra run. The drive started on the two thanks to a blocked punt and recovery by the Lancers.

Whittier Christian will be back at its home field of Whittier College next Friday and will host the Colts of Covina. The Colts were able to best La Canada at home 42-14 on Friday night as well.
