Wildcat Does the Trick for Muir

Muir's Kevon Seymour

(La Mirada) – Muir defeated the defending CIF Champion La Mirada Matadores 33-14 Friday night, showcasing Kevon Seymour in the Wildcat offense.

Seymour rushed six times for 172-yards and four scores including a beautiful 78-yarder in which he split three defenders and outran the defense to put the game on ice with 3:13 remaining and it all came after he battled a 103 degree fever that saw him hospitalized for one day this past week.

“That kid’s a phenomenal football player,” Muir head coach Ken Howard said. “We’re talking about a kid that’s been at home with the flu for three days, he just bounced back yesterday and my hats off to him, I didn’t know he’d have that much for us tonight.”

La Mirada (7-4) opened the game on a 14 play drive that saw receiver Andy Gramajo beat his man one on one in the flat for a 13-yard score.

Muir (7-5) opened its first possession with five straight first downs. The Mustangs got in the endzone on a 16-yard laser pass from Jeffrey Davis to Karl Homes. Bobby Guzman blocked the extra point and the Mustangs closed the gap, 7-6.

After its first drive La Mirada went cold and Muir capitalized scoring two more times before half on scores of 20 and 15-yards by Seymour out of the wildcat.

In the second half LM quarterback Shane Blood threw his first of three interceptions putting the ball on the Mats seven. On the second play of the drive Seymour scored from five yards out from you guessed it, the Wildcat.

With 9:51 remaining in the game Alex Munoz got in the endzone from a yard out cutting the score to 27-14 for La Mirada.

On the ensuing kickoff Jacob Otero recovered his own onside kick breathing life into the Matadores season as it took over on Muir’s 49-yard line.

Two holding penalties cost the Mats valuable field position putting them in a fourth and long situation. Blood eluded several defenders to buy enough time to get the ball to Gramajo in the back left corner of the endzone but the pass was dropped ending the threat with 5:05 remaining.

“We knew they were a big team, we felt we were faster. We thought if we just beat them to the spots and make plays we needed to make, we’d take care of business,” Howard said.

Next week the Mustangs will travel to Bonita (10-1) in the second round of CIF
