Covina Needs Only One Half

The Colts keep gaining momentum

(Covina)- Billy Livingston needed only one half to hurl 201 yards and four touchdowns for Covina, who raced to a 35-0 lead at the break before settling for an easy 42-14 win over La Canada in the first round of the CIF Mid Valley Division playoffs.

The Colts subdued the Spartans to just two first downs in the opening half, registering four sacks and six tackles for a total loss of 38 yards while scoring on five of six possessions. Livingston’s aerial assault within that time frame would find Randy Robledo for a 11 yard homer and Vinny Venegas for a 51 yard paydirt strike to give Covina a 14-0 lead in the first stanza before pinging Andrew Carrillo and Venegas again for scores of 13 and 9 yards. Venegas had a short one yard leap into the endzone prior to that last score and accounted for three Colt touchdowns.

Gevontray Ainsworth exploded for a 45 yard run on Covina’s first play from scrimmage and rushed for all but six of his 133 yards in the first half before scoring his only touchdown from two out with the game well in hand late in the third period.

La Canada couldn’t get much going offensively till late in the fourth when Matt Faber was targeted for a 34-yard catch from quarterback Scott Gray. That helped set up Daleep Sandhu’s 15-yard scoot in to put LC on the board. The Spartans then forced the Colts to punt twice before reaching paydirt again to close out the game and their season as they embarked on a 13 play, 68 yard march, ending in a 1 yard run by Gray. The extra point snap was fumbled and hot-potatoed all the way out to the 30 where LC kicker Franklin Cervenka recovered it and ran it in along right end to get the two point conversion.

Sandhu led the Spartan offense rushing for 76 yards on 8 carries with a 14 yard catch. Michael Arkfeld was next with 5 runs for 46 yards.
