The Montebello Oilers are 4-0 following an incredible season, Chino Hills wins its opener after being a  basket away from advancing to last year’s Division 1A Semifinals, while Mason Holle and Dario Civon look to pick up slack for a new La Canada squad. The 2010-2011 Basketball season is underway and just getting started. Lets look at the early season and get a sneak peak of what’s in store.

Glendora is currently 6-0 after scoring a 62-54 victory over La Serna in the first round of the Fullerton Tournament. The Tartans also claimed the Sierra Vista Winter Tip-Off Tournament  title after breezing through undefeated and winning by an average of 30 points per game. “We started to compete in the second half (Friday) night against Diamond Bar,” Tartans coach Mike LeDuc said after the tournament championship. “We carried it over to tonight. When you’re shooting the ball pretty good, you start to get a real confidence about you, and everything gets easier.” Sophomore Nick Colleta of Glendora was named MVP of the tourney, while  Michael Doering, and Steven Smith made the all tournament team for the Tartans along the way.

In the Mission Valley League, Mountain View is 3-1 after losing a close one to Gabrielino, 50-48, at the Bosco Tech Tiger Cage Classic Tournament. Cesar Yerna (13), Jonathan Benitez (14), and Jeremy Acosta (10) all scored in double figures for the Vikings. Acosta is one of the southern section leaders in scoring average thuis far. On Gabrielino’s side, Ryan Lam nearly recorded a double-double  after dropping in 17 points and grabbing 9 boards for the Eagles. Lam, a senior, is also currently ranked 44th amongst Southern Section scoring leaders, averaging 20 points per game through 4 contests. The win was Gabrielino’s fourth in a row, propelling coach John Carney’s team to a undefeated start to the early season. Another Southern Section scoring leader is Bishop Amat’s Daniel Rodriguez, who is also averaging 20 points per game after only two games. El Monte forward Leo Olvera is leading the Mission Valley League in rebounds through two games, averaging twelve per contest.

Baldwin Park has 4 wins after 6 games, including a 91-27 blowout of Academia Avance, with four Braves scoring in double figures in a defensive display hosting a scoreless fourth quarter. Del Rio contender El Rancho has a scoring machine of its own, Anthony Pacheco is averaging 22 points per game through three games (2-1) for the Dons.

A couple tournaments upcoming to look out for will be the West Covina Tournament, which is taking place Dec.13, the San Dimas Classic beginning today, The El Rancho Blue Pride Classic, and the Arroyo tournament, which are already underway.
