The Heaven: WestCo's Deion Steppes celebrates a CIF title

Good Afternoon!

***

Chris Solomon is the MVP of the Southeast Division.

***

Last night’s Southeast Final had more moments of amazement than any title game I’d ever seen.

Honestly, these games usually turn into dogs by the fourth quarter. Even last year’s Hurricane Bowl at Citrus between Monrovia and San Dimas morphed more into a survival affair than a football game at times.

Last night the focus was on the football and football was off the charts.

It was great to see WestCo’s George Johnson come full maturation. A sophomore quarterback in 2008 to a CIF champion in 2010. Great for him. Great for Mike Maggiore for picking him out and staying with him over the course of three years…

***

Deion Steppes blocked punt in the third quarter resulted in a safety, but almost went through the Bonita uprights before sailing out of the end zone.

I vote any future blocked punt going through the goal posts that not only the safety be awarded but three points as well.

BY GEORGE

The Bulldogs have won their second title consecutive title with a quarterback named George.

George Munoz helmed the team to the title in 2004 as a sophomore.

“So goodbye, I’ll be leaving…I see know sense in just crying and grieving.”

Jeff Cortez has stepped down at Village Christian and has been replaced by former UCLA, Redskin, Raider, Bengal, Cardinals, quarterback Jay Schroeder.

Ed Smith has resigned at South Pasadena

IS…IT…TRUE last night a prominent, PROMINENT, Valle Vista assistant coach was removed by game officials from the West Covina sideline?… Well my lips are sealed but his initials are D.J…I said; D.J….

***

Ken Gunn is an outstanding place to host a finals…

***

Brief debate opened about our All Mid Valley teams last week…Talking about the Southeast kicker most of the discussion centered around Diamond Ranch’s Jeff Stamps…when Bonita Alum started honking for the Bearcats Brandt Davis…What a surprise there…

After Davis booted the 39-yarder to put his team up 33-30 in the final minutes…a case was made for this sophomore.

Its not the leg, there are a lot of legs out there…but what you do with it…

***

I’m gonna take a shot here and say that the Bearcats K.C. Huth is into a lot of X-Games type of sports… Dude put life and limb on the line several times against WestCo…

The Agony:...Of just missing...

The part of the job most don’t know about football parents, is the part the Bonita folks did well in last night…When they are lost, when they are heartbroken, you gotta love them.

Young men who wouldn’t cry or whine over a dislocated finger are left jelly-legged after a 37-33 loss in a championship.

They have got to be loved and reminded that a few hours on one night doesn’t determine their lives…It is something to be added to their lives to make it richer and better.

Same goes for the spectators we are richer and better for having witnessed not only the game…but all that took place after it.

After West Covina fumbled to open the second half, with the score tied at 14, Bulldog DC Jason Heilman was screaming at the top of his lungs: “They are going to take a shot, they are going to take a shot!”

Of course they were, with Garrett Pendleton and a bunch of tall physical receivers they had to take a shot.

But I started thinking; run a draw…catch WestCo off guard…For a split second I was comforted that Bonita HC Eric Podley and I shared a great mind.

Pendleton gave the ball to Giomani Johnson, but when the split second was over Johnson pitched the ball back to Pendleton who went deep down the sideline to Garrett Horine.

Give credit to the players; but two excellent coaching staffs made this game a great one.

***

Broke a cardinal rule on that play…When Horine broke free on the flea flicker and Pendleton was making the throw…I yelled: “Oh man he’s got him!”

I was standing next to Heilman…not cool.

Saving me was the perpetual wall of sound blasting out, in, and around Ken Gunn Stadium.

***

Tonight is a coin toss…and I’ll toss it at 10:30 P.M. tonight to let you know who I picked.

***

Stay thirsty my friends…
