(Covina) – Bishop Amat knew coming into the game the key to defeating Valley Christian was stopping Carrie Korver’s three-point assault. For a quarter the Lancers defense shut-down Korver to pull away with a 47-32 win in the Third Place game of the Covina Christmas Classic.

All-tournament selection Viani Austin scored 15 points and Leticia Galarza showed signs of returning to her 2009 form with 15 points as well.

After spotting the Crusaders a 6-0 to start the game, the Lancers went on a 29-5 run to end the half.

Bishop Amat stopped Korver every time down the court and if not for Athenia Sanchez’s field goal with 2:04 remaining Valley Christian would have been shut out for the second quarter.

The Crusaders never gave up in the second half with a 16-9 run cutting the lead to 12 midway through the fourth quarter. Kristen Lester made a key steal and score late in the game to give Valley Christian some life.

Leeah Powell stopped any hope of a late comeback with a layup to with 1:02 remaining in the game.

Korver ended the night with a game-high 20 points with 17 coming in the second half after having foul trouble in the first half.
