Evans’ Bucket Sinks Monrovia

Jay Henderson had 14 for Monrovia but it wasn't enough

(Monrovia) – Chuck Evans’ driving basket with 1.7 seconds remaining lifted Charter Oak to a 46-44 win over Monrovia Wednesday night in a non league matchup.

Josiah Thropay’s three point play tied it at 44, and then Mike Carter was called for charging foul at the other end much to the chagrin of the Wildcat faithful. Carter took a pass and drove hard to the right side before running over a man on a play that could have been called a block.

With nine seconds left Charter Oak brought the ball up the floor. Evans began his move at the top of key and threw up a runner as he charged down the lane. The ball rested for a second on the rim before falling gently through the net in an apparent buzzer beater.

The officials ruled that there were 1.7 ticks left but the Wildcats’ inbound pass was intercepted to end it.

Evans finished with nine points overall while Thropay, a former Wildcat, led all scorers with 17.

Monrovia used a 6-0 run in the second quarter to take a 21-20 lead at halftime. The Cats increased it to five at 37-32 after three quarters. Jay Henderson, the star of the CIF Football Final, scored five points in the third including a long distance bomb. He also knocked down a three in the fourth and led Monrovia with 14.

But Monrovia managed only seven points in the final period to the Chargers 14 and it got away. Nick Long’s two free throws were the only Monrovia points in the fourth other than Henderson’s five.

Long had 10 points but no other Monrovia player was in double figures. Ryan Hernandez scored only three for CO but it came in the fourth quarter to bring the Chargers within one point.

Charter Oak improved to 7-9 with the victory while Monrovia dropped to 6-10. Both teams begin league play next week.
