Now that the dust is settling from the All Mid selections it is time to look forward to the Mid Draft.

I was an outsider looking in this past week as the Mid guys made their picks. From the start, the shrapnel was flying all over the office. Fists flew every time Joe and Andy disagreed. We (Josh Ouellette and myself) had to resuscitate Tim several times whenever his choices were denied. Well at least that’s how I remembered it. Overall though, it was great times.

This past week I had the fortunate task of watching another impressive highlight film. It was La Serna’s Andrew Buenrostro who showed off his impressive footwork throughout the video. His biggest strength is his throwing ability when moving out of the pocket. He always keeps the ball high in a readied throwing position with his eyes looking downfield searching for open receivers. His ability to shift his hips while running adds to his throwing power. Using his legs more can help add range to his throws and adding that with his quick strike decisions can help make him a complete package quarterback.

“This offseason I am playing basketball for the first time,” shares Buenrostro. “I’ve always wanted to play but never could really find the time because of off season work outs and so forth, but basketball is working out great because I earned a starting spot at center.”

Another area quarterback playing basketball is Arroyo’s Steven Rivera who says he’ll catch up with us at The Mid as soon as the season is over.

“I just want to do my part to help the team,” says Monrovia’s George Frazier or G5 as he is being called around the SGV. He is looking forward to competing for the quarterback position come this spring.

South Pasadena’s Conor Bednarski ended the season with 1,475 yards and 13 touchdown passes adding three more on the ground. He shows excellent ability being able to make reads both from the shotgun and under center.

La Puente has two Sophomore quarterbacks returning for next year. Ivan Vasquez completed 62 percent of his passes and threw for 1,100 yards with 10 touchdowns. With the one playoff game under his belt look for him to go into spring ball with confidence in what could be a heated quarterback competition with his fellow passer Bryan Landeros.

Offenses now a days have switched to the shotgun formations that help quarterbacks decode defensive schemes. Many quarterbacks go a whole career without taking a snap under center. At the next level aspiring quarterbacks need to put in extra effort to transition into under center formations. History has showed that many shotgun field generals lack the skills to play at the pro level.

Stay Classy San Diego.
