Vikings Roll Rosemead

Erick Martinez had a couple quick baskets early to get the Vikings started

(Rosemead) – Mountain View jumped out to a 12-2 lead to open the game and never looked back in a 50-34 road win over Rosemead Friday night in a Mission Valley League contest.

It was a nice bounce back win for the Vikes who lost a heartbreaker to El Monte on a buzzer beater Wednesday night.

Jonathan Benitez buried a pair of three point bombs and scored eight points in the first quarter to get View off and running. Erick Martinez added a pair of buckets and the Vikes led 16-5 after one.

The Panthers shooting woes continued in the second quarter as they converted just 2 of 11 from the field and managed just four points in the period. Benitez knocked down another trey and Cesar Yerna hit a pair of buckets to propel the Vikes to a 27-9 halftime bulge.

Rosemead finally got off the floor in the third with Christian Garcia leading the resurgence. Garcia hit two from downtown and tossed in eight points in the quarter but the Panthers were still unable to cut into the lead. Benitez continued the hot hand with two more rainbows from the Mission Avenue parking lot and Jeremy Acosta forged inside for four points as View increased the lead to 19.

Rosemead post player Danny Villalobos only scored two points in the first three quarters but broke out for nine of the team’s 13 in the fourth including a three point shot. But it wasn’t nearly enough to catch the Vikings.

Benitez lead all scorers with 17 and Acosta added 14 to spark the Vikes. Martinez and Yerna finished with eight and six respectively. Garcia (14) and Villalobos (11) combined for 25 of the 34 points for Rosemead.

Mt. View improved to 3-1 in the MVL and is assured of at least a tie for first after Friday night’s action. Rosemead remained winless in league at 0-4.
