Quick Scans: 6/17/09

I’m back. Rejoice.

I won’t be writing anything about soccer, hockey, horse racing or thumb wrestling. I’ll let Villanueva induce you into a coma with that stuff.

Juan Pierre deserves a gold star for his performance in the absence of Manny Ramirez, but he is noticeably streaking back to Earth. In June, he has posted a line of .236/.288/.255/.543. (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS). In other words, he’s going back to being Juan Pierre. The return of Ramirez can’t come quick enough for the Dodger offense.

Torosian likened Mitch Jones to an air conditioner. I hope for Mitch’s sake he doesn’t have to deal with a sweaty mess named Torosian running in front of him and lifting his shirt on a July afternoon.

Jones is what we call a 3-true outcomes hitter: walk, strikeout or HR. Over the last 2 seasons, 41% of his plate appearances have ended with a free pass, a whiff or a bomb, which is an amazing total. How that ultimately translates in the majors is uncertain, but it’s a nice story to see him make his first big league appearance at the age of 31.

I always hoped that when the Raiders left town, so would the Raider mentality. After watching the Laker “celebration” the other night and attending Dodger games, it’s sad to say that Raider fans just started following other sports.

Former Alhambra Moor Noe Ramirez had a rough outing in his lone College World Series start, but he still had a remarkable season as a freshman pitcher at Cal State Fullerton. He was named a Freshman All-American, the co-Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year, a Big West Honorable Mention and earned a spot on the Fullerton-All Regional Team. Congratulations to a great athlete and an even better kid.
