High School Quarterback Vol.5

“Happiness comes from recognizing and appreciating what we do have…and I have an opportunity to play football!!! “ – Evan Hunko

Watching Burbank’s Adam Coleman I could not help but think that he has that gunslinger style ready to gun you down with one hand on the trigger. He’s able to get tough throws off while fading back.

Coleman threw for 19 touchdown passes and over 2,000 yards with the help of a big arm that allows him to throw quick strikes and long balls down field.

All of this could be helped with a quicker release of the ball. He will definitely be a player to think of when the Draft rolls in next week.

In the coming weeks, possibly days, Bonita will begin its full offseason workouts. The three candidates for the quarterback job next season are Junior Aaron Burgett and Sophomores Tanner Diebold and Joey Halibrin (forgive me if I am mistaken). Both sophomores will be playing baseball for the Bearcats as Burgett finishes basketball in the coming month. Something that Bonita players are known for is playing multiple sports and something the coaching staff prides itself in when it comes to getting their skill players in shape.

“We expect to function at a high level to compete for the top spot,” explained Coach Eric Podley who also emphasized hard work and how maturity within the system of play will help their team’s chances for next season.

A big decision for the Bearcats this offseason is silver or Tampa Bay pewter game pants?

Soon to be Bonita Alum Garrett Pendleton is a hot topic as the Draft nears closer. Will he be the first quarterback drafted? What we do know is the kid is a great player and would be a good asset for any team. Many schools such as Linfield College in Oregon and Occidental College have shown interest in Pendleton.

“With signing day 48 hours away, I have not completely given up hope, as things continue to change even after signing day, but I am not sitting back “wishing and hoping” either. I have enrolled in Fullerton College.” Mayfair’s Evan Hunko has enough units to enroll at Fullerton as a “special admit” and is taking full advantage of it.

Here are my Top Five Quarterbacks going into next weeks draft, these picks are a “Sneak Peak” into the Niner war room.

  1. Aaron Cantu- .636 Comp% 21 TDS 2,822 Yards, Comfortable in or out of the pocket. “QB Eyes” that move defenders almost at will. Threat both run and pass. Great foot work within the pocket.
  2. Garrett Pendleton- .628 Comp% 22TDS 2,033 Yards, Sure fire leader with great ability. Able to make correct reads and strong accurate throws.
  3. Conor Bednarski- .592 Comp% 13TD 1,475 Yards, Possibly the most balanced passer in the draft. Plug him in any system and he will help your team succeed. Able to work from the gun and under center. Good delivery and footwork.
  4. Andrew Buenrostro- .573 Comp% 16TDS 1,887 Yards, Excellent on the run. Great hip turn and delivery when coming out of the roll out. Accurate and keeps plays alive with feet.
  5. Steven Rivera- .659 Comp% 21TDS 1,963 Yards, Three year starter who has a laser. Michael Vick like mechanics when it comes to the throwing motion, a quick release with the snap of the wrist.
