Quick Scans: 6/18/09

I went to a Dodger game with Villanueva and lived to tell about it.

I’ll have you know, though, that the self-avowed Angel lover left the game in the top of the 8th and tried to pin it on his wife. So next time he tries to drop the “Dodger fans leave games early” smack, remind him that he not only do so, but he threw his wife under the bus in the process. I will give him credit for calling Matt Kemp’s 4-6-3 seconds before it happened, though. Blind squirrel, nut, etc…

I never want to go to the Coliseum, much less when 90,000 unemployed or “sick” Angelinos show up for a free event. As I watched bits and pieces of yesterday’s rally, I couldn’t help but think how thankful I was that I was not there.

If the Dodgers won the World Series and they held a rally at the Coliseum, I wouldn’t be there. Now, if they held it at Dodger Stadium, well….then it’s time to use that Mid-Valley press pass. No way would I go as a civilian though.

If I were to pick a most surprising team in baseball thus far, I’d have to go with the Milwaukee Brewers. When you’re staring down a rotation with more question marks than an edition of “On the Couch”, it wasn’t a stretch to see the Brew Crew struggling to finish .500. There they stand, though, with the 2nd best record in the NL at 37-29 entering today’s play. The return of Yovani Gallardo has removed some of the questions about that rotation.

The Texas Rangers would be in that conversation too and speaking of, how about that Andruw Jones? Torosian wanted to put a toe tag on the guy, but thus far he is posting a line of .246/.358/.509/.866 to go with 7 HR and 17 RBI as essentially a 4th OF. Jones tried to imply that Dodger owner Frank McCourt wasn’t supportive last year. Even if that’s true, McCourt certainly had a legit reason to not support Jones and it was far from the reason why Jones had such a poor year in 2008. By all accounts, Jones is actually one of the more likeable guys in baseball. However, it seems he’s still stuck at the age of 15 emotionally and that has stunted a career that held all the promise in the world in 1996 when he hit 2 HR in one World Series game at the age of 19.
