On The Couch: June 20, 2009

Playoff baseball in June?

That is what it felt like yesterday watching the Angels and Dodgers doing battle in Anaheim.

So much for my thought that the Dodgers were single hitters.  Two homers last night showed that they have some “pop” in those bats.

The game had some defensive gems and timely hitting.

Of course, the biggest hit was provided by Angels outfielder Juan Rivera’s home run in the bottom of eighth off Guillermo Mota to give the Angels the lead.

I figure Joe Torosian was crushed to see his favorite Dodger give up the blast.

Today’s pitching match-up of the Weavers’ is the first brothers pitching battle since Andy and Alan Benes.

Angels pitcher Jered Weaver is pitching like a first round draft pick, while Dodgers pitcher Jeff Weaver signed a minor league contract just to make the big club.

Horse racing will have a banner female day next Saturday on both coasts.

Four-year old filly Zenyatta will run at Hollywood Park in the Vanity Handicap, while three-year old filly Rachel Alexandra will run at Belmont in the Mother Goose Stakes.

Part of me is hoping that both star fillies will run in Breeder’s Cup Ladies Classic Santa Anita on November 6th.

I believe the filly and mare division is much tougher than the male’s at present time.  It will show during the Hollywood Gold Cup if the talented filly Life Is Sweet runs against them.

One last thought, anybody getting a chill in here?  I always thought that the day Panther Pride agreed with me was the day well you know.
