(Santa Ana) – Furious pace for thirty-two minutes ended with a final second shot by Muir’s Justin Knoweles fell short to end a storied run to the finals for the Mustangs with a 47-44 loss to Flintridge Prep in the CIF Division 5AA Championship.

Freshman Robert Cartwright gave the Rebels a three-point lead on a layup with 1:22 remaining to help Flintridge Prep to its first ever boys basketball Championship.

Senior center Kenyatta Smith finished his Flintridge Prep career with a game-high 15 points.

Both teams set a heart racing pace during the entire game that seemed to favor Muir early in the second quarter as they made a 10-0 run. The Mustangs defense also came up big allowing five field goals in the first half to take a 23-17 lead.

Muir chose to defend Smith with three defenders during the game that hampered his ability to get any easy buckets during the game.

The turnaround for the Rebels came at the beginning of the third quarter after being down by eight points at the 7:09 mark after Knoweles scored on a jumper.

Jared Nosworthy and Smith scored the next six points, with Nosworthy making an incredible drive coast to coast that cut the lead to two with 5:40 remaining.

The Rebels took its first lead in the second half on another Nosworthy drive that resulted in a three-point play with 3:37 in the third quarter.

Each team matched each other for the remainder of the quarter with Flintridge only able to distance itself by three-points before Jelani Mitchell scored on a bucket and one to tie the score at 34.

Mitchell eventually put Muir up by two with 3:40 remaining in the game only.

Muir never scored again.

Smith answered after a rebound off Kory Hamane’s shot that hit the rim nineteen seconds later.

Nosworthy hit one of his two free-throws at the 2:40 mark to give the Rebels a one point lead.
