Joe Torosian

Good Morning!

They closed Pioneer Point? I’m not just thinking of me but of Arroyo assistant Rosie Penaloza and others on the staff…Where are they going to go? I mean we all can’t have ribs at Robin’s on a regular basis.

College basketball’s greatness was proven Sunday afternoon not on the court, but when all the smart guys on ESPN were arguing about who should be in the NCAA Tournment and who shouldn’t have.

The key to the discussion being they were haggling over teams 60 through 70, not one thru ten… In college football its all about leaving teams out of the championship discussion if they aren’t in the top four and doing everything in the world to protect Ohio State.

Still USC got in…booze, blows, or blow ups…Kevin O’Neil should be coach of the year…

In another discussion over the weekend the subject of schools vying to fill the sixth spot in the Olympic League came up.

I don’t know how it works…but if I were one of the other five schools already in I’d want some dough up front. The Olympic is an excellent league, an appropriate addition would make it off the charts.

One scenario shared, not by anyone with connections, has Monrovia joining the Pacific in the next re-leaguing…Blair getting the boot out of the Rio Hondo…Hoover and Glendale joining the RHL…Interesting.

Enjoyed Matt Koffler’s sit down with Josh Ouellette last week…but I’d like to know what “The Piper” is selling…the 2011 defense could be the best Panthers defense ever?

Really? Better than the 2008 team? Better than the 2005 or 2001 squads?

Of course the first round playoff loss to La Serna in 2005 destroyed its reputation but does anyone remember how good that 2005 Rosemead team was on defense? The Panthers were unbeaten during the regular season and over the course of 11 games surrendered less than a 100 points (96) the entire season.

Last Add 2005 Rosemead: You probably remember Josh Casey, but do you remember a deluxe safety named Paul Molina?

Arroyo needs a post-season win in football…Last time the Knights won a CIF game?

Try 2005…The same post-season Mead was bounced in the first round and South El Monte went on its memorable run to the semifinals.

On November 18, 2005 Dominic Salmon connected on two 60-yard plus bombs to Sergio Leon in Arroyo’s 44-6 victory over Schurr.

South Hills beat Arroyo at Bergstrom the following week, and Schurr won a CIF title the following year.

Did you know that Pasadena quarterback Brandon Cox own a 3.5 grade point average?

Long time San Gabriel Valley coach Pete Smolin really likes Craig Cieslik, now rumored to be in the mix for the Wilson job.

Used to get local basketball coaches to give us their Final Four picks for the NCAA Tourney but that all stopped when former El Monte boys basketball HC John Gillette started complaining; “Joe the only reason you do this is so you can come back and make us all look bad.”

My response back to him was; “Of course Coach, why else would I do it?”

I haven’t received Final Four selections from him since.

I side with the owners in the NFL labor dispute…

Unless the Carolina Panthers are willing to roll the dice on Cam Newton at quarterback, I wouldn’t take one with the first pick in the draft. Newton can be a hero or a goat. He could be a Super Bowl quarterback, he could be the next Charlie Sheen…

The other quarterbacks? Well, they all sort of look like the next Rob Johnson.

Stay thirsty my friends…
