Saints Bats Make Noise Against Temple City

Sara Moore hit a homer to help lead the Saints.

(West Covina) – San Dimas jumped on Temple City early in the first inning for two runs and cruised to a 7-0 win during the opening round of the Charter Oak Charger Classic held at Big League Dreams in West Covina on Monday afternoon.

Saints third baseman Sara Moore went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. She also scored three times.

The Rams were stymied throughout the game by sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Celaya. Celaya scattered three hits through six innings before giving way to Kali Now in the seventh inning. All of Temple City’s hits off Celaya never left the infield.

The first inning started innocent enough for San Dimas with Moore reaching on a base on balls and Aleena Avalos singled to setup first and second with no outs. After Courtney Hine popped out, Janell Wheaton doubled to right-center to score Moore. Ashley Vinsonhaler grounded to second to score Avalos to give the Saints an early 2-0 lead.

For the second straight inning a walk lead to another run for the Saints, this time it was with two outs as Karissa Conner drew a base on balls. Moore and Avalos singled to score Conner.

Celaya had another impressive outing.

Celaya’s only hiccup came in the fourth inning with one out. Kristen Hudak singled but then was caught stealing by Wheaton. Sami Jakeway singled right after Hudak getting thrown out but was left stranded by Jessica Lupercio.

The flood gates opened in the bottom of fourth for Rams starter Jenny Pegg with no outs, Conner singled and set the stage for Moore who promptly hit a homer to right center field.

Pegg found more trouble in the sixth as Brianna Quintana singled to lead the inning off. Moore singled for her third hit of the day and moved to second after Quintana was caught in a run down. Hine singled to score Moore. Wheaton’s single put Saints on first and second with two outs. Hine scored on a wild pitch for the seventh and final run.

Temple City did make one final attempt to get back into the game in the top of the seventh stringing together three-straight hits against Kali Now with two outs. With the bases loaded, Now struck out Cheyenne Moreno to end the game.
