La Canada’s Run Ends

Mike McGlashan finished with 19 points in his final game.

(Los Angeles) – The magical road through the CIF postseason ended for La Canada with a 57-47 loss to La Verne Lutheran.

For those on the ride, the tiny community just on the outskirts of Los Angeles became galvanized through the Spartans which played to a filled out Sports Palace on the campus of La Canada and outnumbered the Trojans faithful at Galen Center four to one.

This night, Grant Jarrett took La Verne Lutheran on his back in the second half with inside dominance to defeat a gutty Spartan team. Jarrett scored just eight points in the first half before exploding for 14 in the third and fourth quarters.

Jarrett finished with a game-high 22 points.

The game’s complexion completely changed in the second half after La Canada took the lead 27-26 with 5:50 remaining in the third after Matt Faber’s layup.

The Spartans went completely cold from that point and were outscored 8-0 for 4:55 of the quarter. Jarrett and Bruce English supplied the scoring during the run.

La Canada finally stopped the run with a three-pointer from Dario CiVon to cut the lead to two points.

Mason Holle tied the score to start the fourth with a layup on a pass from Faber.

The Trojans from that point on of the 7:22 mark made it clear they would not be denied another run to the State Finals.

Jarrett made a layup; English put back his own missed shot to open up a six point lead with 5:31 remaining.

During the playoffs, the Spartans were able to make stops to hold off any challenge or get back into the game. Tonight, La Verne Lutheran didn’t allow it.

For every basket La Canada made, the Trojans answered on the opposite end of the floor.

Conner Boyd’s field goal with 3:11 remaining in the game cut the lead to four. Jarrett scored from inside and Eric Cooper hit a three-pointer to deflate the Spartan faithful with 1:43.

The comeback La Canada fans expected began after Mike McGlashan hit two free-throws. Kevin Payne turned the ball over and McGlashan calmly hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to four with 1:20.

On the next inbounds play, the Spartans press got the best of Eric Cooper as Holle stole the ball. The two on one break for La Canada had the crowd on its feet one second and in disbelief the next as C.J. Cooper stole Holle’s pass in the key to end the Spartans hopes of getting close.

C.J. Cooper finished the play with a pass to English for a layup to put the game on ice for La Verne Lutheran.

McGlashan ended his final game in a La Canada uniform with 19 points.

Notes: This is the second time the Spartans have reached the semi-finals of the Southern California Regional in the State Finals.
