Rams Bounced by St. Bonnies

Julian Jarrard completes his home run trot after a two run shot in the sixth, but it wasn't enough for the green and gold

(Temple City) – St. Bonaventure scored three runs in the first inning and that was enough to beat Temple City as the Rams fell 4-2 in the first round of the CIF Division 4 playoffs Thursday.

St. Bonaventure scored three times on two bleeders, a wild pitch, bouncing double inside third and a ground ball single. Before the bleachers were warm the Rams were down 3-0.

“That was a strange inning,” said Temple City Coach Barry Bacon. “The hardest ball they hit was the ground ball they hit to first base to end the inning.”

Corey Copping started and pitched into the fifth inning. "He pitched well enough to win," said Coach Barry Bacon

Corey Copping started on the mound and pitched into the fifth inning before he was replaced by his brother Calvin Copping. Copping (Corey) allowed only one run after the first and gave up eight hits overall. He struck out six and walked two.

Calvin came on and shut out the Seraphs the rest of way.  He fanned three and allowed just one hit.

“Corey and Calvin both threw well. They pitched good enough to win,” Bacon said. “But you can’t be chasing three or four runs. In this division, as good as these teams are, it’s tough to fall down by that much.”

Josh Grajeda threw a complete game for St. Bonaventure striking out six, allowing five hits and walking one.

Elliot Lee’s key double picked up one for the Seraphs in the first and Justin Strayer also singled in a run. In the fourth, St. Bonnies added one more when Strayer singled, advanced on a base hit by Raul Camacho, took third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

The Rams had two runners on in the second on a double by Jonah Jarrard and a single by Benji Sanderson and two more on in the fifth but came away empty both times. They finally broke through in the sixth when Caleb Halverson reached on a dribbler up the left side and Julian Jarrard unloaded a two run bomb to dead center field to cut the lead in half.

“Julian had a couple of strikeouts in his first two at bats and I said he’s either going to get down or he’s going to come out and swinging and have a great at bat. He really stepped up,” Bacon said.

Alec Vigil beat out an infield hit in the seventh and stole second but he was left stranded.

Temple City finished the season 16-8 overall and can boast about their first Rio Hondo League title in seven years.

“It was a good year. We won a championship and those guys will remember that for the rest of their lives. We have a good core group of kids coming back next year. We’ll be fine,” Bacon added.
