(Temple City) – Temple City has several skill position players returning. Quarterback Mikal Quintanilla returns at quarterback and even though 1000 yard Josh Simangunsong graduated, Jaime Dea, coming off an injury plagued 2010 season, is now healthy and ready to replace him in the backfield. Chris Reed will also play a big part.
But what have impressed Temple City Coach Mike McFarland this summer are the hogs up front.
“I really like our offensive line. We have some returning guys and they look good,” McFarland said Wednesday during practice. “Michael Bassette and Bryan Wong are both back and have been doing a good job.”
Joining those two are Felipe Serrano, who battled injuries last year, Drake Flores, Randy Lam and Bobby Soto.
“We were counting on Felipe last year but he got hurt early in the season, returned for La Canada and then got hurt again,” McFarland said. “He really only played one game. So he should be ready to go.”
Flores was also a full time starter by the end of the last season and he’ll be another anchor up front.
The font line definitely passes the eye test. Bassette goes 6-4, 325, Wong is 6-0, 200 and Flores is 5-11, 245. Lam and Serrano both check in about 200.
It’s always nice to have a returning quarterback and a good back to hand the ball to pays off as well. But it doesn’t work if you don’t have anybody to protect and plow the road. The Rams appear to have that this year.
Ram Notes: Temple City will be in shells Friday (helmet and shoulder pads) and will be in full pads Saturday morning.
The Rams will be working the night shift next week. They are going to Monday through Friday from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
“Playing under the lights will give them a lot of motivation and energy. That’s what they’re going to be doing anyway so we’ll get them started now,” McFarland said.
