Glendale Wins Round One Versus Hoover

By Tom Hendrickson

(Glendale)- For the first time in history Glendale and Hoover High Schools met to open the season, and for the 48th time the Nitros were victorious.

Former starting quarterback Alex Yoon, now a running back, rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown to spark Glendale to a 20-6 victory over its rival on the north side of town.

After the Nitros Mike Davis opened the game with a kick-return to his team’s 36. It took only seconds for Yoon to score on a 4-yard run.

Late in the second quarter, new starting quarterback Evan Norton went 19-yards to Davis and it was 13-0 Glendale at halftime.

With 4:06 to play in the third quarter Norton scored on a 3-yard run to make it 20-0 Nitros.

Hoover, in a difficult debut for new HC Andrew Policky, finally reached the scoreboard on the game’s final play when quarterback Alex Rangel went 10-yards to Rafael Martinez.

The victory matched Glendale’s win total from last season and improved its overall record against the Tornadoes to 48-33-2. The schools will meet again, to battle for the Victory Bell, the last week of the season.
