Covina Runs Away from Gladstone

By Alex Gonzalez

(Azusa) – Gevontray Ainsworth ran for 158 yards for Covina in the Colts 42-0 win over Gladstone at Citrus College Friday night.

From the start the Colts wanted to establish the run early and often. They also showed no after effects of its emotionally draining contest with West Covina the Saturday before.

Ainsworth carried the ball 16 times for 158 yards with two touchdowns. Vincent Venegas also contributed in the running game with 27 yards on four carries and a touchdown.

Once the running game was established the Colts turned to the passing game. Senior quarterback Billy Livingston went 9-13 for 87 yards with three touchdown tosses.

Livingston controlled the passing game. He didn’t throw deep every chance he got but played smart, spreading the ball out to four different receivers and in keeping the chains moving.

For Gladstone, they could not find a way to move the ball.

Quarterback Kevin Amezquita went 5-19 for 84 yards with two interceptions. His longest pass of the night was to Vincent Gomez for 52 yards. The running game went the same as well. The Gladiators Carlos Gomez had 16 carries for 21 yards.

G-Stone had an opportunity to score late in the second half, following Amezquita’s 52-yard connection with Vincent Gomez but the Colt’s defense would not let them in and preserved the shutout.

Up next for the Colts is against El Monte at El Monte High school next Friday night and for Gladstone the will take a trip to Rosemead and play Bosco Tech.
