Cougars Too Much to Handle for Muir

By Josh Ouellette

(Altadena)- Kevon Seymour and the Muir Mustangs couldn’t handle Rancho Cucamonga Friday night losing 35-6.

The first half was a myriad of yellow laundry. Penalty flags flew for both teams from the kickoff until the end.  The only difference was the Cougars were able to get their offense in motion. Muir on the other hand struggled to move the ball all night.

The first Rancho score came thanks to a short field for the Cougars. Beginning on the ‘Stang 35 running back Tyan Washington led the RC with 25 yards on the drive, including a 2-yard punch in. After Christian Casillas’ extra point the score read, RC seven, Muir zero.

A twist of bad fate would hurt the Mustangs early on in the second quarter. Rancho was held at bay on offense and was forced to punt. Back to return was Seymour who waived for the fair catch, but he was hit before the ball got to him. Muir accepted the penalty forcing RC to re-punt 15 yards further back.

On the second go around Seymour fielded the ball but fumbled it as he was thrown to the ground by a host of Cougars and Rancho was able to recover the ball on the Muir 43-yard line.

On the ensuing drive the Cougars scored on the back of Camryn White as he rumbled into the endzone  on his second carry of the drive from 11 yards out. Another Casillas point after made the score Rancho Cucamonga 14, Mustangs still zero.

On Muir’s next drive quarterback Joshua Muema-Washington dropped back and fired but RC linebacker Alani Latu picked the pass off at the 36 yardline and burst pass the offensive line and a chasing Washington to take the ball to paydirt. The Cougars scored for the second time in under a minute and thirty seconds. RC 21 Muir zero.

On the Mustangs final drive of the half Seymour took the snap at the quarterback position and took the ball 77 yards creating a first and goal with nine to score. But the Cougar defense held and kept their scoreless streak making 10 straight quarters without giving up a point. The score at the break was Rancho Cucamonga leading Muir 21-0.

The Cougars gave up the ball on offense on their first two drives but Muir couldn’t do anything with those chances.

Rancho Cucamonga wouldn’t score till their fourth drive in the half when quarterback Dimitri Morales hit Jermel Walker on a quick screen pass and Walker took it 63 yards for the touchdown.

On the next RC drive the Cougars drove 54 yards with a mix of runs by Morales, Washington and White, with White getting across for his second touchdown on the night from five yards out. The score, RC 35, Muir still zip.

The highlight for the Mustangs came with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter when Joshua Muema-Washington hit Seymour over the middle for a 53-yard touchdown pass. Breaking the Cougars season scoreless streak.

Seymour finished the night with 151 total yards and the only Muir TD with a host of scouts in the house.

Rancho Cucamonga (3-0) will be on the road again next week and will take on Charter Oak (2-0-1).

Muir Head Coach Ken Howard said after the game, “ We just played horribly, coming out I don’t know what happened.” Howard also said, “Pre-season is over. We get into league right now, we got Arcadia next week, and we’ll prepare for that.”
