Game Night: Mid-Valley Division- Week Five

Adan Guillen (4), Sal Chavarin (76) and the Panthers host Temple City this week

Game times are 7:00 PM unless otherwise indicated

Thursday October 6

Valle Vista

Nogales (3-2) at San Dimas (3-1) – Citrus College

Last Year: San Dimas 40-12

Nogales is coming in having won three of five games including a 29-14 win over Wilson last week in the league opener. Keith Bolden is a great player.

But San Dimas is on another level. Since the zero week loss to Bonita in the Smudgepot, the Saints have outscored their opponents 131-36 which included an impressive 31-14 win over Monrovia two weeks ago.

San Dimas jumps out early and never lets up.

Montview

La Puente (4-0) at Gladstone (1-3) – Citrus College

Last Year: La Puente 28-7

The Warriors haven’t lost a game while dispatching of some fairly decent opponents. Gladstone struggled last week to beat Ganesha. The Gladiators offense has had trouble scoring points while La Puente is averaging over 37 per game.

The only question about the Warriors is are they the best team in the Montview?

LP rolls.

Valle Vista

Covina (4-1) at Baldwin Park (2-3)

Last Year: Covina 17-9

Billy Livingston has had a couple of weeks off and should be ready to go. Coach Darryl Thomas said he was “day to day” after last week’s win. Of course even if he doesn’t play the Colts have Vinny Venegas and that might be enough.

Baldwin Park was making strides with a couple of victories until last week’s disappointing loss to Northview.

The Braves are tough enough to hang around, but ultimately Covina has too much. With Northview scoring 35 on them the Braves could be in trouble defensively.

Pomona (2-3) at Northview (1-4) – Covina District Field

Last Year: Northview 35-20

The Vikings raised some eyebrows with a big win over Baldwin Park last week. Maybe they are a contender in the Valle Vista. Pomona has some athletes. They gave Covina a scare with a furious fourth quarter rally.

Pomona has the weapons to get it done but the Red Devils need to get them started early. I think this is the third time I’ve written this but Terell Mosby needs more touches.

Northview keeps it close but ultimately Pomona comes out on top.

Arroyo (3-1) at La Canada (1-3)

Last Year: Arroyo 26-7

All-Time: Arroyo 2-1

The Knights had a week off after getting beat by Hart. They’re happy, healthy and ready to go. The Spartans have had a rough time so far. Their only victory was a two point win over Glendale in week two.

Alhambra and Maranatha like to air it out and they put 34 and 41 up on LC respectively. Steven Rivera and Arroyo will take to the air as well. Knights win handily.

Arroyo 31 La Canada 7

California (3-1) at Montebello (2-2)

Last Year: Montebello 27-24

Cal has been impressive in the first four weeks. The Condors lost to Troy but routed Schurr, Sonora and Rowland. Jim Arnold’s crew, so young last year, has grown up.

Montebello is also improved from a year ago. The Oilers won a couple but also lost a couple including a 22-7 defeat to another Del Rio opponent- El Rancho- last week.

Cal should have enough to get it done but it won’t be easy. Montebello is a tough out this year.

California 21 Montebello 17

Maranatha (5-0) at South Pasadena (3-1)

At first glance this might look like a rout. But the Tigers can surprise people. Just ask Alhambra. The defense has been playing well and if the offense can get started (They scored 49 on Glendale) it could be close.

That being said Maranatha is on fire. Andrew Elffers, Darien McGee and Clifton Martin can score in a hurry. If the Minutemen get a big lead the Tigers will have a hard time coming back. Maranatha remains unbeaten.

Maranatha 35 South Pasadena 14

Monrovia (1-3) at Paramount (1-3)

Last Year: Monrovia 27-7

This should be the start of something big for Monrovia. The Cats have lost three of four but that’s easy to do when facing the likes of Arcadia, San Dimas and South Hills. The Wildcats were 1-2 last year and never lost again.

This year they’re trying to do the same thing at 1-3. The Cats will put it all together. They’re too talented not to.

Monrovia 28 Paramount 10

South El Monte (4-0) at Bell Gardens (1-3)

Last Year: Bell Gardens 42-7

Bell Gardens lost three games by a total of nine points. Last week the Lancers got off the floor with a win over San Marino. With a break here or there they could be in the same position as South El Monte (4-0).

The Eagles, although on a resurgence, have beaten opponents with a combined record of 6-11. A win over BG would be a huge confidence booster for South and give the Eagles momentum heading into Mission Valley League play.

Bell Gardens might be too high of mountain to climb.

Bell Gardens 28 South El Monte 24

Temple City (0-4) at Rosemead (2-2)

Last Year: 10/8/10: Rosemead 29-28, 11/19/10: Rosemead 49-36 – First Round CIF Mid-Valley Playoffs

All-Time: Temple City 12-7

The Rams have lost four straight while the Panthers have rebounded from two close losses to win two in a row. Temple City has some holes defensively which Rosemead might be able to expose with Matt Eddy pounding the ball.

The Rams need to avoid the mistakes that have been plaguing them early in the year. If they can and Jamie Dea and Mikal Quintanilla can get the offense going they have a shot to beat the Panthers.

Rosemead has success staying on the ground and doesn’t have an offense that is quick strike. If Temple City gets a double digit lead, the Panthers could be in trouble. But I don’t think they’ll fall behind. Mead runs the ball and plays defense.

Rosemead 21 Temple City 14
