Now Reed This: Azusa Rolls!

Desmond Reed got four in Azusa's Rout

(Citrus College) – Desmond Reed sat out the first quarter due to a missed practice. But once he entered the game he didn’t miss anything as he scored four touchdowns to lead Azusa to a 45-10 rout of previously unbeaten Duarte Thursday night in Montview League play.

Reed scored on runs of 19, 10 26 and 27 while racking up 180 yards on 16 carries. He also caught a pass for 34 yards and recovered a fumble.

“Oh yeah, he’s the real deal,” said Duarte Coach Tip Sanders. “I told our guys that this was going to be a tough game. But it’s a good learning experience for us.”

Duarte shot itself in the foot several times turning the ball over four times. In the first quarter the Falcons coughed it up on their own 20 and the ball rolled all the way into the endzone where Azusa’s Adrian Chavez fell on it for a touchdown for the first score of the night.

Duarte countered with a 19 yard field goal by Saul Acosta to cut it to 7-3. The score was set up by a 34 yard pass play from Dyran Adams to Richard Bradford.

Reed got rolling in the second capping an 87 yard drive with a 19 yard touchdown run. Nicholas Leon intercepted Azusa quarterback Jake Martinez later in the quarter and returned it down to the Aztec nine yard line. Two plays later Bradford fell on a Duarte fumble in the end zone and Duarte was within three at 13-10. That was the last time the Falcons scored.

Reed scored again late in the quarter on a 10 yard dash for a 19-10 Azusa lead at the half.

On their first drive of the second half, the Aztecs marched 44 yards on five plays. Reed broke off a 26 yard run eluding several would be tacklers in the process.

In the fourth, Reed performed his magic one more time out running the Duarte defense for a 27 yard score with 6:31 left in the contest. Earlier in the quarter, Martinez hit Ruben Salas on a corner route for a 32 yard TD strike.

After Reed returned a Duarte fumble back to the Falcon 32, Martinez hit Salas for 30 yards down to the two and Alex Cota went over from the one to finish the scoring.

When it wasn’t Reed doing the damage for the Aztecs it was Martinez. The senior threw for 165 yards and ran for 116 more.

For Duarte Tailik Mason had 13 carries for 82 yards and Bradford had two catches for 39 yards.

“We played real sloppy early until I started yelling at halftime,” said Azusa Coach Joe Scherf. “We have a lot of new players this year and have had some growing pains. It was an uncomfortable feeling starting off 0-3. But Duarte is going to be a good team. They have a lot of sophomore and juniors. It’s good for the league for them to be better.”

Azusa improved to 3-3, 3-0 in league while Duarte dropped to 4-1, 2-1 in the Montview.
