Quick Scans: 7/20/09 Edition

Don’t believe the rumors about Clayton Kershaw getting traded to Toronto for Roy Halladay. It would be a parallel move, given that the Dodgers have won the last 7 Kershaw starts. In those starts, he has given up no runs 5 times and 1 run and 2 runs in the other 2 starts. Over the last 43 innings, he has given up 3 ER and only 42 baserunners while striking out 42.

A measuring stick may be CC Sabathia. Milwaukee sent a good prospect and 3 middling ones to Cleveland last summer, so talk that the Dodgers have to give up Kershaw or Chad Billngsley is ridiculous. There’s been no mention of the other teams in contention having to pay such a steep price, so why would the Dodgers?

The Phillies are starting to run away with the NL East and if the Mets don’t get healthy soon (Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, John Maine and Jose Reyes are out), Philly could end this my mid-August. The Braves, currently in 2nd place, are a non-factor. Neither are the 3rd place Marlins.

Torosian asked the other day whether Brian Fuentes is really this good. In short: yes. He’s not doing anything out of the norm so far. This was pretty much the same pitcher he was in Colorado. He just flew under the radar there.

Two months ago today, the Dodgers had an 8.5 game lead on San Francisco. One month ago today, they had an 8 game lead on the Giants. Today, that lead is 7 ½. You can only find that sort of glacier-like progress from the GOP.

Former Dodger Edwin Jackson serves as a cautionary tale that players, especially pitchers, aren’t going to be all they’re going to be at the age of 22. That’s how old Jackson was when the Dodgers dumped him off to Tampa Bay for Danys Baez and Lance Carter. Jackson didn’t have instant success with Tampa, but started to put it together last season. Now with Detroit, he made the All-Star team and is sporting a 2.52 ERA and a WHIP of 1.08 to go with a 7-5 record.
