Apaches Escape With Win

Julissa Aguirre helped lead the Apaches.

(South Pasadena) – Arcadia looked to get out of the gates early in its first game of year against South Pasadena. Instead, it stumbled and needed a late run to begin the season with a 38-37 win.

Michelle Lai’s layup with twenty-three seconds remaining in the game gave the Apaches a one-point lead after furious rally by the Tigers late in the fourth quarter.

Kelsey Nakamura made one final attempt to win the game with nine seconds remaining, but her shot was short.

After Julissa Aguirre scored four straight points to give Arcadia it largest lead of the game with 2:32 remaining in the final quarter, South Pasadena began its comeback.

Sophia Hathaway and Nakamura each scored to cut the lead to one with 1:05 left in the game. Hathaway then scored from inside five-feet to give the Tiger its last lead of the game.

The Apaches struggled early, missing its first eight shots of the game before Aguirre scored from underneath the rim.

Eventually, Arcadia took its first lead early in the second quarter after a 5-0 run.

South Pasadena did a good job of shutting down returning Apache guard Melody Chang by holding her to just nine points. Luckily for Arcadia, Aguirre did the job late for Arcadia scoring 10 of her game-high 14 points in the second half.

Hathaway scored 12 points to lead the Tigers.
