Chris Solomon, Chris Caballero and the Bulldogs reach Southeast final.
For the second straight week, La Mirada fell behind by more than 17-points after Chris Solomon scored his third of five touchdowns on a 52-yard run and West Covina went on to a 63-34 rout Friday night in the Southeast Semi Finals.
The Matadores battled back to get within one touchdown only to have West Covina completely take over in the final quarter with Solomon’s final two scores and Jimmy Frazier’s second touchdown to give the Bulldogs their second straight appearance in the CIF Southeast Division Finals.
Down by 11 with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter, James Myres intercepted Chris Caballero at the La Mirada 30-yard line. The Matadores drove to as close as the Wesco 13-yard line only to have to settle for a field goal from Austin Watkins from 32-yards out to cut the lead to eight.
After the Bulldogs defense held strong, it only took two plays from scrimmage for Frazier to score from 57-yards.
West Covina’s defense, which pressured Gerry Myres throughout, finally got through as Justin Meaders registered his only sack of the night.
Two plays after the Matadores turned it over on downs, Solomon evaded two tacklers and split another pair enroute to a 22-yard touchdown run. Solomon finished the night with 306 yards rushing and five touchdowns.
Spotting La Mirada an early 3-0 lead, Lonzell Barnett returned the kickoff 99 yards to open the scoring for the Bulldogs.
The West Covina offense barely saw the field in the first quarter as Solomon’s first carry of the night resulted in a 64-yard run out of the Delaware T-wing.
Looking for a spark after being down 14-3, La Mirada found it with Adam Carrasco scoring from 54-yards out to cut the lead to four with 7:58 remaining in the second.
