Southeast Division Defensive Assistant of the Year: West Covina’s Jason Heilman

West Covina DC Jason Heilman

Welcome to Awards Season

In 2010 defensively West Covina surrendered 271 points on defense as they went 13-1 and won the CIF Southeast Division title. Plus 31 sacks

In 2011 the Bulldogs allowed 268 points on defense as they went 13-1 and won the CIF Southeast Division title. Plus 31 sacks.

This repeat performance came about without Maurice Dupleasis playing linebacker and everyone knowing they were lining up against the defending Southeast champs.

The key to this success has been Heilman, perhaps one of the most intense assistants.

When adjustments were needed Heilman made them. When encouragement was needed Heilman was there but he wasn’t afraid to get in a player’s face as well.

“He’s so animated,” said defensive end Justin Meaders. “When there’s a pick he’ll run with one his players down the sideline.”

For that effort and result Heilman is the Mid Valley Sports “Defensive Assistant of the Year” in 2011.
