Southeast Division Newcomer of the Year: La Serna’s Frankie Palmer

La Serna quarterback Frankie Palmer

Welcome to Awards Season.

(The criterion for “Newcomer of the Year” is simple; Underclassman with no extensive previous varsity experience.)

Some will say they knew, but no one really knew what to expect out of the quarterback position at La Serna High School. Andrew Buenrostro had graduated and taken his monster 2010 season with him.

Enter sophomore Frankie Palmer and all he did was throw for over 1,754 yards, toss 16 touchdown passes, and run for seven more to lead his team to the Southeast Division title game against West Covina.

In the quarterfinals on the road against Los Altos Palmer began to emerge to eyes outside of the Del Rio. Winning 42-38 shootout with the Conquerors, the next week he guided his team into the finals for the first time since 1967 with a victory at home against Muir.

Before being picked off twice in the finals, this sophomore quarterbck with only two years of football experience went six weeks without throwing an interception. An amazing season, bodes well for an amazing future.

For that effort and results Palmer is the Mid Valley Sports, Southeast Division “Newcomer of the Year” in 2011.
