Mid-Valley Division Player of the Year: San Gabriel’s Alex Villalobos

San Gabriel's Alex Villalobos

Welcome to Awards Season.

What can be accomplished when your school starts the season 1-4, you have two different starting quarterbacks, and opponents know that you are the focus of your team’s offense?

Try this: 125 catches, 22 touchdowns, 2,001 yards receiving, 690 yards on kick-off returns, 274 yards rushing, 34 tackles, and three interceptions.

This is the season Alex Villalobos put together while the Matadors were struggling and the season he capped off when San Gabriel was winning eight straight and going to the CIF finals.

In the post season, against the best talent, Villalobos grabbed 34 passes and made one key play after another. But it may have been his 65-yard kick-off return late against Arroyo that set up the game winning score in the second round of the playoffs where he was at his best. Or it might have been when he was punting, or defending, or rushing, or blocking, or receiving.

For that effort and results Villalobos is the Mid Valley Sports, Mid-Valley Division Player of the Year in 2011.
