The Koffler Years

Coach Matt Koffler stepped down at Rosemead after 11 years combined at the helm

(Rosemead) – When Rosemead Coach Matt Koffler resigned Tuesday night the Panther football players lost more than just a coach. They lost a friend, a teacher, a mentor and for some, a father figure.

Koffler graduated from Rosemead in 1992 where he starred at quarterback and then went on to play at USC.

Here at Mid Valley Sports, we have many memories of Koffler, who was always a great quote after a game or at a practice. He made several appearances on the Mid Valley Sports Show and always drew some of our highest ratings.

If wins and losses are always the bottom line, then Koffler was a success. He had the Panthers in the playoffs in nine of his 11 years and made appearances in the Finals and Semi Finals with an overall record of 79-45.

Koffler had two stints at his alma mater. He coached for three years beginning in 1999 and then left for a job at Artesia after the 2001 season. He also coached for one year at La Puente. When he returned in 2004 it was a prodigal son story as the students and faculty alike were excited and welcomed him back with open arms. He vowed he would stay at least five years upon his return and lasted eight memorable seasons.

Koffler is not only respected by players but opposing coaches as well.

“It’s a sad day for the MVL,” said Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser Tuesday night after learning of Koffler’s decision.

Many of the coaches that have been on his staff have gone on to become head coaches. Anthony White, Jim Arellanes, Brian Zavala and Ray Hernandez all served under Koffler and now DC Marc Paramo is a candidate for the job.
