Arroyo's Alex Arriaga gets ready for a rebound in playoff game against Beverly Hills

(El Monte) – Arroyo fell down by eight in the first quarter and never bounced back in a 61-38 loss to Beverly Hills in the first round of the CIF Division 3AAA playoffs Wednesday night at Vern Nelson Fieldhouse.

The Knights leading scorer Primitivo Gomez was double and sometimes triple teamed all night and finished with just 10 points. Gomez was limited to two points in the first half. But even with that he still led Arroyo in scoring and was the only player in double figures.

Mike Lanier took scoring honors for Beverly Hills with 24 points including 11 in the fourth quarter. Lanier was a perfect ten for ten from the free throw line.

Lanier got the Normans going early with eight points in the first quarter. Austin Mills also knocked down a three as Beverly Hills took a 16-8 advantage.

Arroyo got a three pointer and five points from Edgar Lupercio in the second quarter but the Knights were unable to cut into the lead and trailed 30-20 at the break.

The Normans jumped Arroyo early in the third stretching the lead to 15 quickly with a 7-2 run. Broderick Smith had seven points in the quarter and Beverly Hills was up by 17 at the end of three.

Gomez scored six of Arroyo’s eight points in the third but Beverly Hills steadily pulled away.

Lanier put it away in the final quarter with five consecutive free throws. Lanier had help offensively from Smith who had 11 on the night and Mills who finished with nine.

Lupercio and Ryan Tran both scored seven for Arroyo and Alex Arriaga added four points inside but it wasn’t nearly enough.

The Knights finished second in the Mission Valley League and closed out the season with 14-13 record.
