Is Favre Signing with Vikings Sacrilegious?

By Joshua Ouellette (A special to Mid Valley Sports)

Brett Favre going to the Minnesota Vikings is one of the worst things that has ever happened in the world of sports. It’s worse than if Tommy Trojan wore UCLA jersey. It’s worse than if the Dodgers signed Barry Bonds. It’s worse than the thought of Larry Bird even thinking about becoming a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Why? It’s very simple. The man should be retired; and the thought of seeing a purple number four jersey is just down right sickening.

I love Brett Favre. I’ve been a fan of him against all odds. My Father is a die hard Chicago Bears fan, and I know a little bit of him died that fateful day when I was four and I asked him to buy me that Brett Favre uniform replica pack – the one with the helmet and the mini pants and the jersey.

I wore that uniform everywhere. He was my hero, at the time he was an upcoming star in the NFL and he was a few years away from a Super Bowl win against the Patriots. I remember being him in Madden on my Sega Genesis. I remember playing catch with my dad and when he asked who I wished I was and I would say “Brett Favre.” He probably wished the words Eric Kramer or Jim McMahon crossed my lips, but no it was all about Brett. It was all about number four.

He is the BEST QUARTERBACK EVER! His presence on the field was that of a god of ancient times. But like Hercules it’s time for him to accept mortality and hang up that rocket that is his right arm. He is enshrined in Green Bay. They love him in Green Bay. In fact there probably have been many children in Wisconsin given the name Brett as a tribute to their hero, and deservedly so.

But now he has betrayed them. This is how he repays the sixteen years of devout dedication and love? He goes to a team that is one of the Packers biggest rivals. He goes to a team that plays the Packers twice a year. He goes to a team that if successful can knock the Packers out of the playoffs.

It’s not entirely Brett’s fault. He was forced out of Green Bay and Broadway Brett was good for New York and good for the New York Jets. It gave him one last chance to be great, one last chance to see if he had it in him to win. He was amazing for half of the season but his thirty-nine year old body eventually broke down.  And what appeared to be a miracle season didn’t end well for Brett or the Jets.

So what does he think will happen now? What do the Vikings expect to get out of him? Does he have a 3,500 yard, 30 touchdown season left in him? I guess we’ll find out. But there’s one thing I’m sure of. Brett Favre going to the Vikings and donning a purple number four jersey is just sacrilegious.
