Bonita 14 San Dimas 3
Bonita blasted to the forefront in the second inning on a seven run volley and never looked back, cruising to a mercy-shortened 14-3 rout of San Dimas to open up day two of Apache Invitational pool play. Eight different players recorded RBI hits for the Bearcats, featuring Anthony Gonzalez (3-3, double, sac-fly, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Joe Willard (2-3, 2 RBIs), a 2 run double to end the game by Connor Renard, and Jake Blunt (3-4, 2 runs, RBI). Nolan Henley went 1 for 2 with an RBI double.
The other Bearcat multi-hitter, Thomas Castro, went 2 for 3 with two runs. Justin Row and Austin McGilvra both pulled infield RBI hits. San Dimas loaded the bases in the first and second innings but yielded one run out of it all as Bonita’s Tanner Diebold halted the Saints momentum with a running catch in the opening stanza. Unfortunately he collided with a fellow teammate and was out the remainder of the game. SD loaded it again the next inning, with Andrew Espinoza punching in an early 1-0 lead for the Saints on a knock to center.
The Bearcats followed with a double play to third baseman Castro. Sam Stavang picked up the win for Bonita throwing the first four, walking one, pelting two more, and issuing 2 runs on 4 hits. Mitch Johnson overcame a rough start in the fifth to close the door with consecutive strikeouts.
Arcadia 8 West Covina 5
Arcadia scored 5 of its first 6 runs on two outs, and those all proved valuable as they stranded 12 runners despite drawing 10 walks and twice loading the bases. West Covina plated three in the third and closed to within 2 in the sixth but Andrew Cordeiro endured seven hits and four runs (1 earned) overall to earn the win for Arcadia in six innings of work. He rebounded with a groundout and consecutive strikeouts to halt WC.
Gary Huang was 2 for 4 with a walk and 4 RBIs to lead the Apaches, who also received solid hitting from Erik Trask (2-3, 2 runs, an RBI, a double 2 stolen bases), Phil Juarez (2-3, RBI), and a red hot David Dominguez (2-2, 3 runs scored).
David Garcia (2 RBIs) and Steve Cordova (RBI) both batted in runs with doubles for the Bulldogs.
La Salle 8 South Pasadena 2
Former El Monte Lion Antonio Ruiz pitched a quality 5 1/3s for La Salle, issuing two unearned runs on 3 hits and 5 walks while striking out another 5 to earn the win. Ruiz also
reached safely in all 4 plate appearances (2-3, an RBI, walk, and error). Noeh Martinez sizzled at the plate and used his wheels well to benefit the Lancers, going 4 for 4 with 2 infield hits, 3 runs, an RBI, and a double.
La Salle tacked on three in a wild third stanza for a 4-0 advantage. Then, South Pas responded with a run scoring error on a Dylan Trimarchi grounder and a hanging RBI single by Joey Harmon to slice it in half.
La Salle got those runs back in the ensuing top of the fourth as Ruiz and Bowdien “Bubba” Derby buzzed RBI singles through the 3-4 side to be up 6-2. The Lancers added insurance in the fifth as Jon Krieg came off the bench and arched a liner to shallow center to drive in Chris Williams, before Martinez safely plated when Bubba’s shot to first was misplayed in the sixth.
Glendora 4 St Francis 2
Glendora slid into pay dirt via two errors, a groundout and wild pitch. That was enough to help nudge the Tartans past St. Francis and a fine pitching performance by SF’s Tei Vanderford who allowed two hits and struck out 6, at one point retiring 12 in a row.
The Tartans made sure it stood up as Matt Young dusted off a shaky sxith inning to eventually pick up a save, preserving the win by starter Trevor Fisher (4 2/3s shutout innings, 5 Ks, 5 walks, 2 hits).
Donovan Holmes drew a straight leadoff walk before ranging to third and scoring because of repeat miscues on Martin Gallegos’ single. Gallegos then paced home when John Angiuli grounded to first.
St. Francis two out rally sliced the gap in the sixth as Cole Ramseyer and Danny Porto belted RBI singles, but Matt Young struck out 4 of his next 5 batters to ice it for Glendora.
