Good Morning!

T-Minus-4 until “Mid Valley Classic”

Game Eighteen: September 12, 1997 at El Monte

Trailing 21-14 in the third quarter before Kenny Smith ignites a rally, the Knights score the final 24-points and take a 38-21 decision from Temple City.

Smith finished 12 of 27 for 195-yards and two touchdowns, but it was receiver Sergio Perez’s seven catches for 130-yards and two scores that frustrated the Rams defense in the second half.

Junior tailback Jamil Frazier scored all three of the Rams touchdowns with runs of 52, 10, and 32-yards. He finished with 23-carries and 145-yards on the ground.

Irony came in 1997 for both schools. It was the last time TC would fail to make the playoffs, and the first time that had happened since 1987. For Arroyo it would mark D.J. MacKinnon’s last semi-final appearance, the Knights wouldn’t return to the final four again till 2004.

Last Add Mid Valley Classic: In 1996 Los Altos beat Arroyo 24-21 in the semi-finals, in 1997 the Knights exacted payback on Greg Gano’s bunch with 26-21 quarterfinal victory.

Alright San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman wins “The Good Guy” award this season…

Florida State-Miami makes for great Monday night. I’ve always loved the Tomahawk Chop.

I’m taking suggestions on how I can get a writer out to University H.S. this Friday by 3: P.M. to Charter Oak play…The Orange Crush traffic is a killer…

Even in the midst of football season three homers in a game by the Dodgers merits mention especially when one of the three is James “Don’t Call Me Dan Driessen” Loney.

Arcadia’s Taylor Lagace convinced a lot of people last Thursday night, that he can play ball. Then again so could big brother Brent.

Overlooked last Friday night was the performance of Bonita junior Casey Horine who recorded 11-tackles, forced a fumble, and caught two passes, one for a 73-yard touchdown.

During summer office talk I was adamant about Gladstone winning the Montview this season, but after solid Zero Week performances by Workman and La Puente the sharks are starting to swim around me.

I’m still dancing with G-Stone…The Warriors have to prove they can get by the Lions.

Amazingly, for the first time in my life I rooted for BYU on Saturday night.

How fickle is football? Less than two years after making one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history where he pinned the ball between his helmet and hand, wide receiver David Tyree was cut by the New York Giants.

Stay thirsty my friends…
