IRWINDALE, CA – An estimated 4,500 watched a champion crowned when Nick Joanides finished second and fifth in the AC Delco Super Late Model twin-races at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

Joanides is still a few races away from possibly becoming the first two-series champion at the track.  There are still four races remaining in the Auto Club Late Model season in which he leads the points race by 26.

Dallas Montes continues his hot streak as he took the checkered flag for the fourth time-in-a-row.

AC DELCO SUPER LATE MODELS – 40 LAPS

Rip Michels appeared to be in a battle for second with Luis Martinez Jr when a caution was thrown on the 39th lap.  Instead, Michels was able to use the high groove to pass a very fast Travis Thirkettle to win his sixtieth race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

Thirkettle becomes the hard luck loser of the night, when the caution came out, was a good ten car-length lead.

The caution was thrown when Justin Johnson tapped Derek Thorn as they were battling with Nick Joanides and David Beat for fifth place.

Michels qualified fastest, but was hard-pressed to get the lead from Thirkettle after they restarted on the seventh lap.  Thirkettle would lead 37 laps and finish second.

Martinez held of Bear Rzesnowiecky for third.

JAN’S TOWING BANDALEROS – 20 LAPS

A scary moment in the Bandaleros race as Devan Newberry was involved in a rollover on the backstretch of the first lap of the race.

The incident occurred when Newberry and Aaron Anderson touched coming out of turn two.  Newberry’s car then clipped Anderson’s front and began to roll five times before coming to a stop.  Newberry would leave under her own power.

For the race, it was Ryan Cansdale who won his tenth race of the year and his third straight to give himself a larger cushion heading into the final point race of the season.

Anderson came back from the incident to finish second.

LEGEND CARS – 35 LAPS

Dallas Montes sealed the rookie-of-the-year title for the Legends Car with his fourth straight victory.

Montes took the lead on the fifth-lap and never looked back.

Series-leader Ryan Reed wound up in second and extended his lead by 18 points as Brandon Toy finished in eleventh.

Brent Schiedemantle managed to get third.

Randel King won his fourth-race of the brand new series and extended his point lead by six with one race left.  King now leads Anderson by 18 points and only has to start to clinch the title.

Missouri native Kendell Lopez finished third and led the first-three laps of the race.

The race was never really in doubt as King continued his hot-streak as he took the lead on the fourth lap and never looked back.

Ryan Reed finished second to round out the podium.  It was Reed’s second time finishing in the two spot.

AC DELCO SUPER LATE MODEL – 40 LAPS

It appeared that Travis Thirkettle was going to have to weather another green-white-checkered as Luis Martinez Jr and Bear Rzesnowiecky were in involved in a wild wreck as Thirkittle passed the finish line on the 40th lap.

After further review, Thirkettle was declared the winner.  It was a close call for Thirkettle as he was nipped in the first race of the evening after running strongly.

Thirkettle was fast for the second straight race tonight and deserved to finally get his first win of the season.

In finishing second, Nick Joanides won the Track Championship and State Championship for the 2009 year.  He also finished third in National Championship points race in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series.

Joanides ran half as many races as the eventual National Champion did this year.

To Joanides credit, he consistently finished in the top-five and won 13 races in 21 races.  He also won the Lucas Oil Slick Six Title as well.

Danny Gay inherited third place after Martinez and Rzesnowiecky were placed 18th and 19th respectively.
