La Serna 45, Whittier 7
The Lancers (6-2, 2-0) remained tied for first in the Del Rio as Nick McCarty and Gio Long each scored twice in the first half as the dominated the Cardinals (3-4, 0-2) Friday night at Cal High’s Whittier District Field.
The Lancers quickly built a 21-0 lead after one quarter on scores by McCarty and Luke Gonzales and a 30-yard interception return by De’Andre Sanchez. By the end of the half, Long scored twice, McCarty scored again and Tavis Guerra hit a 27-yrd field goal.
The Cardinals finally got on the board in the third on a 21-yard run by Eddie Orta less than a minute into the quarter.
HACIENDA
Rowland 28, Walnut 21
The Raiders (6-2, 3-1) earned their third straight League victory as they handed the Mustangs (1-6, 0-3) their third straight loss Friday night at Walnut High.
Avery Duffus sparked the Raider ground game with a season-high 265 yards and two touchdowns. He reached the 1,000-yard mark with his performance. His second score, a five-yard run, broke a 21-21 tie and gave the Raiders the win.
Robert Gonzalez scored twice for the Mustangs, nearly erasing an early 14-0 lead in the second quarter, while quarterback Cameron Siete erased a 21-13 halftime lead with a one-yard run and two-point conversion early in the third.
PACIFIC
Arcadia 49, Glendale 7
The Apaches (3-4, 3-1) had little trouble in defusing the Nitros (1-6, 0-4) to take sole possession of second place in the Pacific League with their win Friday night at Arcadia High’s Apache Stadium.
Jake Medel and Sheldon McKinley were responsible for all seven touchdowns. Medel scored five touchdowns as part of his 202 yards on 20 carries, while McKinley carried only five times for 121 yards, but two of those carries were scores of 71 and 40 yards.
After getting a 35-0 lead at halftime, McKinley’s second score of the game, the 41-yard run, increased the lead to 42-0 and brought out a running clock for the remainder of the game.
Hoover 37, Pasadena 8
The Tornadoes (3-4, 1-3) ended a number of streaks as they provided the upset of the night in the Pacific as they stunned the Bulldogs (1-6, 1-3) Friday night at Glendale High’s Moyse Field.
The win not only ended the Tornadoes’ 17-game losing streak in the Pacific League, but it also ended two streaks dating back to the 2oth Century. The win was the first over a league opponent other than Glendale since 1994 and the first win over Pasadena since 1986.
The Bulldogs managed to score with 10 minutes left in the game, as backup quarterback Elijah Trejo scored on a six-yard quarterback keeper, preventing the shutout.
Muir 21, Burbank Burroughs 14
The Mustangs (4-3, 4-0) broke a 14-14 tie with less than a minute remaining in the game as they kept hold of the top spot in the Pacific as they beat back the Indians (2-5, 2-2) Friday night at Muir High.
The two touchdowns scored by the Indians, a one-yard run by Israel Montes and a 70-yard pass from Andrew Williams to a wide-open Conor Joyce, were the first points scored on the Mustangs by a Pacific League opponent so far this season.
Mustangs quarterback Josh Muema-Washington scored the game winning touchdown with 45 seconds left in the game, capping a 15-play, 71-yard drive.
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
Downey 14, Gahr 5
Justin Huff rushed for a career-high 235 yards as the Vikings (5-2, 2-0) stayed in a three-way tie atop the San Gabriel Valley League with their defensivc win over the Gladiators (3-4, 0-2) Friday night at Downey High.
Huff put the Vikings up in the first quarter on a 68-yard run after the Gladiators got a safety on a blocked punt early on. The Gladiators were only able to manage a 25-yard field goal from Isiah Soto late in the first for the rest of their scoring.
Jeremy Villa put the other touchdown on the board in the third with his 55-yard punt return.
SUBURBAN
La Mirada 51, Glenn 9
The Matadors (7-1, 4-0) continued to dominate the Suburban League as Gerry Myres threw for 247 yards and five touchdowns as they easily grounded the Eagles (1-5, 0-2) Friday night at La Mirada’s Ron Davis Stadium.
Myres threw four touchdown passes in the first half before the Eagles got on the board with a 32-yard field goal by Andy Partida with less than a minute in the half. Tyler Luatua and Dallis Shipp each caught two touchdowns in the game, while Nico Carrasco led the Matadores’ ground game with 83 yards.
Bellflower 45, Norwalk 44 (OT)
A six-yard pass from Swain Williams to Andrew Gose in the first overtime period gave the Buccaneers (4-3, 2-1) sole possession of second place as they spoiled Homecoming for the Lancers (6-2, 2-2) FRiday night at Norwalk’s Excelsior Adult School.
Despite trailing 28-24 at halftime, the Lancers took the lead on their first possession of the third quarter when Rashaad Penny broke out for an 82-yard touchdown, putting the Lancers up 31-24. Penny had 292 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns on the ground.
Penny also caught a 21-yard touchdown that put the Lancers up 38-35 in the fourth quarter, but the Lancers answered with a 41-yard field goal with two second left to send the game into overtime.
