Week 10 Roundups: Southeast Division

DEL RIO
Santa Fe 42, Pioneer 31

The annual battle for the famed “Super Chief Bell” between the Chiefs (6-4, 4-1) and the Titans (2-8, 1-4) nearly ended the same way it did last year as a second half scuffle threatened to bring an early end to the match, but the Chiefs managed to keep their wits about and retained possession of the Bell for another year with a come-from-behind win Friday night at Pioneer High’s Titan Stadium to secure second place in the Del Rio League.

The Titans were leading 24-21 early in the third when a scuffle broke out on the field after Chiefs quarterback Christian Lara’s pass attempt went incomplete, prompting a brief scuffle that nearly emptied both benches. However, unlike last year’s result, only the two players involved in the fight were ejected from the game and play continued.

Late in the third quarter, the Chiefs finally took the lead on a one-yard run by Gabriel Cisneros, putting the Chiefs up 28-24. They would take back the lead for good early in the fourth on Lara’s third rushing touchdown, part of the 190 rushing yards put up by Lara in the game.

Sophomore Daniel Jung scored three touchdowns for the Nitros, including a 70-yard fumble recovery in the first quarter to put the Nitros up 7-0 and a 46-yard interception return in the third that put the Nitros up 37-13.
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
Downey 31, Lynwood 26

The Vikings (7-3, 4-1) were doubly lucky as they ended the regular season with a win over the Knights (3-7, 1-4) to earn a three-way tie for the San Gabriel Valley League title, then won the coin flip that gave them the top spot in the playoff spots for the league, Friday night at Lynwood High.

The Vikings’ Justin Huff rushed for over 100 yards in only the first quarter of the game then was pulled for the rest of the night, but his replacement, Eric Carrillo also gained over 100 yards against the Knights. Running back Alex Kline rushed for 175 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries, while quarterback threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns, two to Kendren Pritchard and one to Christian Pabico. The Gladiators have a slim chance at earning the wild-card slot in the playoffs.

Dominguez 21, Paramount 13

For the second year in a row, the Pirates (8-2, 4-1) were denied the chance to claim the San Gabriel Valley League title outright, and like last year, the Dons (5-5, 4-1) were the ones to deny them, forcing a three-way finish atop the league with the win Friday night at Dominguez High’s Dons Field.

Eric Black scored all three of the Dons’ touchdowns in the first half, getting 141 yards on 19 carries on the night. Black’s three scores erased an early 7-0 :Pirate lead from Deonte Dixon’s one-yard run with three minutes left in the first, but Black tied it with his first score, a 30-yard run with 37.4 seconds left in the quarter. Lamont Odom cut the lead to 21-13 with his 20-yard touchdown pass to Tyrell Davis with four minutes left in the third, but the Pirates got no closer, despite shutting out the Dons in the second half.

Not only did Paramount lose the outright crown, they ended up as the no. 3 seed in the playoff slots from the league, with the Dons in second and the Downey Vikings in the top spot.
