Week 10 Roundups: Mid-Valley Division

RIO HONDO

La Canada 42, Blair 0

The Spartans (2-8, 1-4) ended a four-game losing streak in the Rio Hondo League by handing the Vikings (0-10, 0-5) their eighth shutout of the season Friday night at Muir High’s Walton Field.

Running back Andy Paynter ended his La Canada career by becoming the first Spartan to rush for over 1,000 yards in the last seven seasons, Paynter scored four touchdowns as part of his 227 yards on 28 carries. The last Spartan rusher to accomplish the feat was Lavelle Peterson, who amassed over 2,400 yards in the 2006 season.

The shutout closed out one of the worst seasons in the history of the Vikings, they were outscored this season by a total of 556-28, their only points coming in a 31-14 loss to intra-city rival Marshall and a 54-14 loss to the City Section’s Frederick Douglass Academy.

Monrovia 35, Temple City 14

The Cats (8-2, 5-0)captured their 29th consecutive Rio Hondo League win as they captured the league title outright for the fifth straight year as they knocked off the Rams (5-5, 3-2) who despite the loss, locked up a berth in the Mid-Valley Division playoffs, Friday night at the Monrovia Sports Complex.

The win gave the Cats their sixth overall title in as many years, the only co-championship of that run coming in 2007, when they shared the title wioth Blair, the last team to beat the Cats in league play. Although he carried the ball just four times for 58 yards, GeVontay Ainsworth scored three touchdowns for the Cats, while quarterback Blake Heyworth connected with Mason Bryant twice in the second quarter.

Chris Reed was one of the lone bright spots for the Rams, getting the Rams on the scoreboard after a fumbled punt return put the Rams inside the Cats’ red zone midway through the final quarter. Reed would score from a yard out to prevent the shutout.
VALLE VISTA
Wilson 28, Nogales 6

The Nobles (1-9, 1-5) ended their season with a fifth straight loss in league play, giving up 28 unanswered points to the Wildcats (4-6, 3-3) who kept their very slim playoff hopes alive with the win Friday night at Wilson High’s Wildcat Stadium.

Although the Nobles’ Antoise Fields opened the scoring with a 53-yard rush on the first play of the game, the Wildcats answered back with two consecutive touchdowns from Erick Rodriguez and a 65-yard interception return by the Wildcats’ Andres Abarca, giving the ‘Cats a 21-65 lead.

Josh Logan secured the win early in the third quarter with a two-yard score, part of his 59 yards on 13 carries for the Wilcats. Rodriguez led the ground attack with 125 yards on 21 carries, including his scoring runs of 34 amd five yards in the first half that put the ‘Cats in the lead for good.

Covina 28, Pomona 0

The Colts (7-3, 4-2) secured the third place playoff slot in the Valle Vista League as they shut out the Red Devils (3-7, 2-4) Friday night at Covina District Field.

The Colts got rushing touchdowns from Frankie Ramirez, Shazeb Mallick and Gage Phipps, as well as a 30-yard field goal from Darren Torres. The Colts amassed 271 total yards on the ground in the win, Ramirez led the rushing attack with 138 yards in the win.

Manny Lua was the bright spot for the Red Devils in the loss, throwing for 64 yards and rushing for 78 in the loss,
