The Chiefs (7-4) erased a 10-3 fourth quarter lead to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section’s Southeast Division playoffs Friday night with an 11-10 road upset of the Bearcats (5-6)at the Bonita High’s Glenn Davis Stadium.

The Chiefs took an early 3-0 lead in the game on Eddie Mendez’ 22-yard field goal, but the Bearcats took the lead in the second quarter after blocking a punt attempt by the Chiefs and recovering it on the Chiefs’ 14-yard line. Running back Shane Pitts took the ball on the next play and scored, putting the Bearcats up 7-3. The Bearcats would extend the lead to 10-3 late in the half as quarterback Brandt Davis, who also handles field goal kicking duties, put the ball through the uprights from 33 yards out.

Ironically, it would be Brandt who helped spark the Chiefs’ comeback in the fourth quarter. On their first play of the fourth, Brandt, pinned deep in his own territory, was sacked in the end zone for a safety. On the ensuing possession after the free kick, Robert Campos would connect on a slant pass from backup quarterback Christopher Mancilla for a 57-yard score, putting the Chiefs up 11-10. However the two-point conversion try failed, but the Chiefs’ defense held on for the remainder of the quarter to preserve the win.

The Chiefs will return to Pioneer High’s Titan Stadium on Friday to host the top seed in the bracket, the La Mirada Matadores. The Matadores eliminated the Arcadia Apaches 42-17 at Ron Davis Stadium to advance.
