Championship – Montclair 71 La Cañada 48
Montclair appears the looks of an early favorite in the Mt.Baldy league coming off convincingly easy victories over Bishop Amat the prior night and likewise again to sweep past La Cañada and capture the Arroyo Invitational championship.
Tournament MVP Jody Smith continued his stellar start over this fledgling season by amassing another 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists for the Cavaliers, who also benefitted from a hustling performance off the bench by Joe Carrington with 11 points and eight boards.
Kevin Fregoso (8 points, 2 steals) lent a hand as well for five assists. Kyle Smith quietly blended into the party going four of five from the field with a pair of treys for 10 points. Gabriel Ontiveros was perfect on all six second-half free throws amidst his nine points.
LC shot woefully in the free throw department across the second and third periods but stayed in the hunt thanks to a decrease in turnovers and productive play in the low with Jack Anderson’s 15 points and 8 rebounds. The Spartans closed to within six on a three by Brendan Hempstead (13 points, four 3-pointers) with 5:07 left in the third, before Montclair shoved forth an 11-0 run to seize momentum.

Third Place – Bishop Amat 44 Arroyo 43
Arroyo refused to throw in the towel with a five point deficit dangling inside the 40-second mark and capitalized upon repeat failed opportunities by the Amat Lancers to ice the game.
A technical foul called against Amat with 3.1 seconds left placed Primitivo Gomez at the line. He drained both shots to make it a one point game and give the Knights a chance to win, but his own attempt at a game-winner as time expired fell short amidst hurry as Amat survived.
Primi accrued 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals, finishing 16 for 17 at the charity stripe, with a net average of 27.5 points per game for this tournament.
The Lancers were led by another authoritative effort from Joseph Cook who muscled in 12 points in the second half and finished scoring 18 with 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Fifth Place – Workman 57 Wilson HH 49
The Lobos had a lackluster second quarter but regained command in the second half on steady runs of 10-0 in the third and 14-0 in the fourth to beat district rival Wilson of Hacienda Heights.
Though far from stellar at the charity stripe, Mario Macias was superb elsewhere for Workman to compile 21 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, and two assists.
Osnar “Pepis” Garcia hit a pair of threes (including a buzzer beater from well behind the arc) in the first quarter. J P Rodriguez was another Lobo in double figure points with 13.
Brandon Miramontes went to work scoring points and swatting shots for the Wildcats as he led his team with 15 points and three blocks. Kenny Lopez provided a rebounding punch and collected 13 caroms. Justin Diaz followed with 11 points and four assists.

Seventh Place – Arcadia 65 South El Monte 53
Arcadia fared prominently in the fastbreak early on and was nourished by a healthy third quarter en route to notch its first win of the season by defeating South El Monte.
Brian Taylor scored 19 of a game high 26 in the second half, including 12 in that third stanza, to bolster the Apaches, who also benefited via Joe Haines’ three steals and two blocks, the contributions of Jordan Stellern (5 points) and Ben Bowen, who both pitched in six assists, and a productive off-the-scoreboard line from Kevin Gill (9 points) on three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block.
South El Monte received 13 points from Reyes Abalos and seven by Alex Ortiz (5 rebounds, 2 assists). Jordan Vargas had six points on threes in the first and fourth.
