Azusa Tournament: Day One Roundups

Covina’s Mike Peters had 27, 7 and 9 in a 12 point win over Temple City

Gladstone 37 South Hills 35

Ben Reaves scored a team high 11 points, all in the second half, to lead Gladstone to a two point win over South Hills. Ben Kane had 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Huskies.

The Huskies struggled, squeezing out 18 points combined after three stanzas, but nearly matched it all in a fourth quarter comeback that was successfully foiled by Eddie Servin, who emerged with key rebounds and blocks inside the last minute that enabled the Gladiators to prevail.

Servin finished with six points, six boards, four assists, and three steals for G-Stone. Manny Chavira added an extra punch from mid and post-range to chip in eight points and seven caroms. Gladstone improved to 3-0 with the victory.

Diamond Ranch 60 Mt. View 41

Nnadi Udengwu scored 21 points to spark Diamond Ranch to a 60-41 win over Mt. View. The Panthers were in control from the opening tip leading by 25 at one point. Jordan Santone scored 14 and Jose Ojeda had 10 for the Vikings in a losing cause. Diamond Ranch improved to 4-2 while Mt. View dropped to 4-3.

Four other Panthers copped at least six points. Jesse Garibay had nine, plus seven rebounds and two blocks. Off the bench, Reece Pfeiffer pounded in eight points, while Robert Adkins helped engineer the scene with four dimes, a pair of steals, and a block.

Covina 60 Temple City 48

Mike Peters did a little bit of everything for the Colts (4-2) with 28 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 9 steals in a 60-48 win over Temple City. The four year varsity player nearly had a triple double leading Covina back from a four point halftime deficit to get the 12 point victory. The Colts knocked down ten three pointers including seven in the second half. Elias Hernandez added 11 points and 4 steals.

Felix Awujo scored 14 for Temple City (2-3) and Eric Olivas added 9 points and 6 rebounds. Kasmir Khaliq was a force down low with 8 points and a team high 10 boards.

Both Covina and Temple City swung back and forth in a torrential shower of threes with the teams combining for 17 overall. TC accounted for six scores in a row by those means which capped in the third with 3:55 remaining on a go-ahead one by Olivas for a 36-33 lead.

The Colts responded with three treys of its own amongst Peters, Blythe Curry (7 points, 10 rebounds), and Elias Hernandez (11 points in 2nd half, three 3’s) towards the end of the third and took the lead for good on another Hernandez stroke and two Matt Hicks free throws to start the final quarter.

Azusa 58 El Monte 50

Kevin Perez (21), Ricky Salas (13), and Carlos Montiel (12), all scored in double figures for Azusa in a 58-50 win over El Monte. Jorge Caldera tossed in 25 for the Lions and Jacob Moran added 12. It was the first win of the year for Azusa (1-5) while El Monte dropped to 2-2.
