Mustangs Escape 31-27

(Covina)-On fourth and goal with less than a minute Billy Livingston was intercepted by Leonard Rhodes to seal the 31-27 victory for Walnut over Covina.

The first half was the tale of two quarters. The Mustangs came out fast scoring on their first two drives. Austin Cooper connected with Rhodes for a 63 yard touchdown pass.

After stopping Covina, Milan King trotted in from four yards out for Walnut’s second touchdown.

On the ensuing drive Thomas Peralta picked off Sebastian Duran and returned it 44 yards into Colt territory. Three plays later Aubrey Coleman tipped a Cooper pass to himself for a 20 yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

But the second quarter was all about the Colts. Duran capped off a 73 yard drive with a three yard run to cut the lead to 14.

After a Walnut three and out Covina’s Livingston hooked up with Orlando Gonzales for a 69 yard touchdown pass. The point after was missed as the Mustangs clung to an eight point lead.

At the end of the half the Colts put together a nine play 77 yard drive capped off by a 27 yard pass from Livingston to Remontay McClain. Covina converted the two point conversion to tie it at the half 21-21.

The Colts continued there hot streak in the second half intercepting a Walnut pass taking it to midfield. Covina capitalized with an 11 yard drive scoring on a five yard pass to Gonzales. The point after was missed giving the Colts a 27-21 lead.

The Mustangs regained their composure putting together a field goal drive with 11:23 left in the fourth to cut the lead to three. After a defensive stop Darian Lindsey returned a punt 86 yards to pay dirt to put Walnut ahead for good.
